One of the Greatest Nfl Rivalries
Toni Rhode
June 8th, 2013
“One of the Greatest NFL Rivalries” Nothing says football to me like, the smell of my mom's famous hot wings frying or dressing up in purple and gold to cheer on my beloved Minnesota Vikings. I have learned through my years of cheering for the team, that being a Vikings fan means putting up with those “Cheese-heads” from the state next door. I believe the Vikings vs. Packers rivalry is one of the greatest in the NFL. I've found this to be true not only through my family traditions, but also from witnessing player and fan behaviors, and simply the geographic placement of these two bordering states on the map.
Ever since I was a kid I can remember my entire family getting together every Sunday, and some Mondays, to cheer on our Vikings. It is probably one the greatest and most fond memories of my childhood. But the best part had to be when my uncle Gordy would show up, things quickly turned to the infamous Vikings vs. Packers rivalry. Within moments the arguments began and the cheering got louder, my Dad and uncle would go back and forth for hours fighting over whose team had the better players, or why this year was their year.
Although I’ve grown up knowing this rivalry was a big deal amongst my family, I never fully understood it’s magnitude until I witnessed it with my own eyes. This rivalry tends to bring out the crazy side of more people than any other I’ve witnessed! Even getting players involved in the antics, I can remember in 2005, the first time the Vikings and Packers met in the playoffs, with a Vikings win, Randy Moss showed Packer fans his good side, mooning Lambeau Field. Then there was the first time I attended an NFL game, October 2011 and fittingly it was none other than a Vikings vs. Packers game. Before even arriving at the stadium I began to see the excitement of all the people just riding the train into downtown. Vikings fans had their entire bodies painted in purple and gold, and wore giant fuzzy hats with huge

Regardless of Manning being released by the Colts, the Brady and Manning rivalry are a series of games between the two greatest quarterbacks in the NFL. As was previously stated, Brady has played with the New England Patriots since 2000 when he was picked in the sixth round of the NFL draft. Manning, however, was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, in the first round of the NFL draft and played for the Colts until he suffered a neck injury. “Brady, and Manning have played one another a total of seventeen times,” with Brady leading the series 11-6. Although Brady leads the overall series, the two are currently tied 5-5 over the last ten seasons (Myers 23). They’ve also met five times in the NFL playoffs, with Manning leading the series…

The Super Bowl is considered the game of the year for many Americans. The Bears have appeared in two Super Bowls, victorious in 1985 and defeated in 2006(NFL). This demonstrates that this team has the potential to reach the Super Bowl soon. In addition, a division title is the best award a team can earn from its own division, and the Bears have earned them, three times in the past decade. “NFC North Division Championships: 2005, 2006, 2010”(NFL). This portrays that the Bears are capable of winning in the playoffs. In other words, the Bears are the most stupendous National Football League team because of the number of Super Bowls they have won and because of the division titles they have won.…

The Minnesota Vikings may not have gone to the Super Bowl before, but that doesn’t mean they are one of the worst teams in the NFL football league. In fact, each season they are improving to greater their chance in the Super Bowl. The Minnesota Vikings had a strong streak this past year by closing out at week five as the only undefeated team left in the NFL. Even fewer people would have predicated this after the quarter back Teddy Bridgewater went down with a devastating knee injury. Regardless, of their scoring drive, the Minnesota Vikings are an outstanding team because of the head coach Mike Zimmer, offensive coordinator Norv Turner, and great receiving depth.…

The game is off to a slow start as both teams punt on there first possesion. I must say though, Len Dawson and Bart Starr are looking good. However both defenses aren't budging an inch, now the Packers are moving up field in this impressive second drive! Touchdown! Bart Starr throws to receiver Max McGee for the first score of the game. After a sucsessful field goal the Packers are up seven to nothing. The cheifs answer back moving the ball 66 yards in just six plays! Were all tied up seven to seven. But on the next drive Packers move the ball 73 yards downfield to take back the lead. The crowds roar in this coliseum is deafening, I can barely hear my own thoughts. Now, the Cheifs trying to get some momentum…

The Best Game Ever, by Mark Bowden, was a great book that talks about the 1958 NFL Championship game that helped transform the NFL into what it is today. It has exceeded all my expectations of the book and truly shows the impact this game had on the NFL. This was the first ever football game that was a national event, this was the first ever professional football teams viewed by millions. It would also be the first sudden death overtime game ever played in the NFL, Making the game that much more exciting. In 1958 Johnny Unitas, the Colt’s star quarterback and league’s Most Valuable Player award winner, was making $17,500 for the year, five years later Joe Namath would be earning $427,000 for the year, and this stat truly shows the impact this game had on the NFL. The game even had an impact on the author, he and every other kid in the world wanted Johnny Unitas’ high top cleats growing up, everyone wanted to be him. This was the beginning of athletes becoming celebrities in society. I was surprised to see that football wasn’t very popular back then, before this game football was a joke compared to our country’s pastime, baseball. Football is now easily the country’s most popular sport, organizations would grow to be more lucrative and be worth more than many small countries. I did expect the book to talk more about the actual game though, most of the book just talks about the teams and all the players on the team’s lives and what happened leading up to the game. Very little of the book is the actual game, there is also a good amount of the book talking about what happened to the players after the game, unfortunately, half of the players from that great 1958 Colt’s team are no longer around today. The players who are fortunate enough to still be alive today talk very fondly of the team and say it was the time of their lives. The author wrote the book to show others the transformation of the league and how it affected the nation, including himself. The…

The 1985 Bears super bowl champion team really proves what hard work and dedication can lead to. This win obviously meant a lot to the many men on the field, and for the entire Chicago bears fan base. Coach Ditka put together an almost unstoppable offensive attack and their defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan made their defense arguably the best defense of all time. Proving how much impact the right coaching can have on a team, and also how the Bears could not have won without this superb coaching. Lastly, the struggle, and perseverance it takes to become one of the best teams of all time is unreal. Through the battles of the season the team became stronger and came out on top like true…

Imagine 96.9 million people watching the same thing, ingesting copious amounts of food and beer, and cheering maliciously for a squad that may or may not be their team of choice. I grew up in South Africa where the Super bowl is not nearly as big as it is in the United States. I was naive to the idea of watching any big game besides the World Cup. When I moved to the US I did not know what the Super bowl was. 198 countries watch the Super bowl and it is aired in 25 different languages across the world. I can’t help but think to myself that this is just a game and I don’t really care who wins, even though my surrounding suggested otherwise. I am sitting in a room full of diehard Seahawks fans. All of the furniture has been moved to each wall in the little room so that everyone can see the big flat screen TV. Beers are cracked, chip bags are opened, and we are about to watch the most watched TV program in United States history, the Super Bowl. Bronco’s fans are turned away and the guys roar at them as they try to enter the small apartment. “If you are not supporting the Seahawks you can stand up and get the hell out” one of my friends yelled as non-supporters walked away. Bud Light is the beer of choice in the room and Doritos are the chip of choice. As the game is about to start the room ignites and everyone is immediately fired up. The commercials play through the loud chatter in the apartment and they seem to be unimportant except for a few that are considered memorable. The Super Bowl is a spectacle and there is nothing else like it. The Super Bowl is a large reflection of American culture. Through media, commercials, and the atmosphere that this game creates, patriotism and masculinity are unintentionally the main aspects of this spectacle.…

In August of 1919 two men would unknowingly make history by organizing a small football team. This team would go on to become the Green Bay Packers, the most unique team in all of professional sports. One of the two men was Curly Lambeau who would eventually have the Packers Stadium named after him. Lambeau’s employer Indian Packing company, donated the jersey’s and allowed them to practice on their practice field so it was natural to call them the Packers which is still their name today.…

Sports are an intimate part of many people’s lives. Without it, many of us would not share certain relationships or bonds with people who like it as much as we do. Football is indeed my favorite sport to watch. From the touchdown dances to seeing a favorite player break a record, football is intense, exciting, and amusing to watch. Football teams can define the character of certain regions and places (Sports and Recreation, 2004). In good old Minnesota, we “bleed purple” and love our Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings have never won the Super Bowl, we still love them regardless because of their hard work and dedication to the sport and to the fans. The whole organization behaves in a manner that keeps the fans coming back for more, as do other National Football League teams around the United States. The National Football League and its teams need to have spot-on organizational skills. If there is not proper organizational…

Sports play such a huge role in our society; many people form their lives around watching or playing a certain sport. In my house, when football season starts, my dad and brother watch football religiously every Sunday and Monday. On Sundays some of my dad's friends come over to watch the game, my mom prepares snacks and lunch for "the guys". When the game is on they are so interested in it, that they have no idea what is going on around them, I try to talk to my dad when the game is on and he always seems to ignore me. I love how they get so into the game, and cheer really loud and yell at the television. For them like many other people, they have found football to be a hobby, something to do in there past time. They have formed habits around watching the game.…

When football fans hear the name “Robert Kraft,” the first thing that comes to mind is the New England Patriots and the modern day dynasty that he, with the assistance of others, have helped create. They also think about his desire to save the Patriots franchise and his dedication to rebuild the organization from the ground up. However, when players hear the name “Robert Kraft,” they think of a different man. Not only do they recognize him for his tremendous commitment to his football team, but for his superior dedication to the entire National Football League. In the midst of the 2011 NFL lockout, Robert Kraft played an instrumental role in helping both sides agree to terms that would ultimately save football. Jeff Saturday, an NFL Offensive Lineman—now retired—said, "Without him, this deal does not get done. ... He 's a man who helped us save football (Litke)."…
