I used to camp with my family when I was growing up. One morning during a heavy storm I went out and decided to walk through the woods. I was probably only 8 or 9 years old at the time, but to me I was old enough. I just wondered away from our campsite and down a path, through a little field opening and along a stream following a rabbit I saw hopping off in the distance. I had no idea what time I left or even when I wanted to go back. All I cared about was finding things to look at and new things to discover. I ended up playing on the river bed with some frogs and trying to catch minows. Eventually when I went back the only discovery I had waiting for me was a grounding from my mom, who did not seem to think that what I saw or found was nearly as cool as I did. In fact she thought the whole thing was incredibly stupid of me to have done.
So at the first chance I got to leave I took it. I signed up for the Army, and left for a whole new worlds to explore. Because of the military, I have lived in 3 different homes in the United States and traveled to Ireland, Germany, Spain, Kuwait, and Iraq. Without it I probably never would have had the chance to leave Indiana. To me it was perfect way to wonder the world. The military paid for my travels, food, and housing. Granted this didn’t come without sacrifice. But I gained so much knowledge and so many skills from it that I would have never been allowed to think of trying in the civilian life. I also found a
