Summaries
A summary is a short summing-up of the important ideas in a text. We use summaries when doing research or studying, but we also often need to summarise information in situations in daily life.
In an examination, a summary tests your understanding of a text, and your ability to extract relevant information for a specific purpose.
Checkpoints for summarising * Read the passage until you understand it. * Sum it up in one sentence. This helps you to pinpoint the main idea, and to avoid focusing on unimportant details. * Make sure that you understand the purpose of your summary. * Select only the information needed for your purpose. * Make a rough draft in your own words of the information you select. * Generally, we omit examples, figures of speech, quotations, direct speech, repetition, and minor and irrelevant details. (However, when making a speech, for example, we may want to use some examples or quotations.) * Your final version must be written in the format and style specified, for example as a speech, a review, a report, and so on, and must read clearly and fluently. * Keep to the word limit: examiners count the words in a summary. * At the end, write in brackets the number of words you have used.
