This article explains the relationship between intangible assets (advertising and R&D) expenditures and internet firms’ market value during 1996-2000.The author presents two opinions in regard to internet stock’s valuation. The first theory is based on DCF methodology and asserts that due to poor earnings and low earnings visibility, internet stocks were irrationally overvalued in 1999. Secondly, based on the option pricing theory, it can be justified that the prices were warranted due to growth of those firms and volatility as primary value drivers. The article details five literature reviews on valuation – (1) Investment opportunity approach to valuation and more especially growth firms, (2) The life cycle theory, (3) The effects of intangible assets (R&D and advertisement) to market value, and (4) Valuation of internet firms using real options.…

Prescription depressants are responsible for fourteen percent of overdoses while street drugs, such as marijuana, are guilty for thirty-nine percent of drug overdoses (Maxwell 267). Statistics prove the prescription drug epidemic that adolescents and adults face. Teenagers in suburbs and rural areas are more frequently exposed to prescription and illegal opiates due to its marketability and highly addictive properties. As consumers of prescription opiates build a tolerance, the addict begins to find cheaper opiates, such as cocaine and heroin, to satisfy their craving. Prescription opiates, administered by medical doctors, are commonly used to relieve sports injuries and other traumas. Doctors…

Ford promoted its F-150 truck using a "roadblock" on the Internet-- running banner ads for 24 hours on the same day on the three major portals (AOL, MSN, and Yahoo). More than 50 million Web surfers saw the Ford ad and millions clicked on the banner (this is a measurable response). The three major portals attract 70% of Americans to their websites monthly. According to Business Week, the Internet now accounts for 14% of the media time of Americans. Advertisers are very excited about an advertising medium that has a built-in tool to measure the effectiveness of the AD. Television ratings, on the other hand, measure how many individuals watch a particular program but many of the viewers do not actually see the commercial.…

    Ethics of Lying

I think that many people have found themselves in situations where they must make a decision on whether to lie about something or tell the truth. Many would probably agree that people choose to lie to save themselves from a problematic outcome telling the truth would have caused. Most people have been raised with the foundational principle that lying is wrong, and yet all the people will, at some point in their lives, most likely will choose to lie instead of telling the truth. The interesting phenomenon however is that sometimes when people choose to lie, the result can be less suffering for others than if they told the truth. Although the majority of the population would agree that “lying is wrong”, I think most would also agree that others enduring unnecessary suffering that is not beneficial to them because of the truth is also wrong. So what guidelines should I choose to follow to determine whether it is acceptable for me to lie or not? This is a very hard question to answer because the criteria must be both flexible to meet differing circumstances (which oftentimes have many “gray areas), yet firm enough to ensure that I don’t start lying for the “wrong” reasons. I think my criteria would consist of three questions. Question 1: Will the truth result in unnecessary suffering for others? If the answer is yes I would move to question 2, if no I should tell the truth. Question 2: Will lying benefit or harm others? If lying would harm others I should of course tell the truth, if it would benefit them I will move on to question 3. Question 3: Am I lying for my own personal gain or trying to hide my sin/mistakes from the world? If I am lying for these reasons I should instead tell the truth; I don’t believe selfish lying is morally right. However If I am not being selfish I should move to question 4. Question 4: Do I honestly believe that Jesus would choose to lie instead of telling the truth in this instance? This is a hard question to answer because I of course…
