Frances E.W. Harper (Judy Whipps) was a suffrage leader who represented the Negro Women. Harper was a lecturer and writer who opposed the idea of “only” white women have the right to vote. In 1891, Harper gave a speech to the National Council of women that called for equal rights to vote for African-American men and women. Harper stated in the speech that African-Americans were not dependent on the North and South but “members of the body politic who has a claim upon the nation for justice, simple justice.” Harper’s speech highlights some of the radical slurs and the divide between whites and Negros.…
Who would have thought 50 years ago that a person could socialize with complete strangers across the world with just the click of a button? The web is full of useful and important scholarly information, but it’s not just about business and education. Along with posting pictures, videos, and blogs, the web is available for a plethora of other options. It’s full of fun sites for people of all ages and with different interests. One way to enjoy the web is to visit a social networking site. Sites such as Facebook, Zorpia, Friendster, and Bebo allow you to personalize a profile, join groups, share thoughts and pictures, and add different applications. Online communities are created by people connected together to share common interests, goals, and purposes. With technology advancing at such a steady rate, the future possibilities of the social web are endless. Although these sites are full of interesting things to do, there are also some downfalls to having an account online, such as…
Communication among the internet has become increasingly popular, especially among adolescents. About ninety-three percent of young people in America between the ages of twelve and seventeen are using the internet. Most adolescents are using the internet to communicate among social networking websites such as facebook and twitter. They are usually continuing communication among already formed friendships. These friendships could include people they see daily, friends from summer camp, town sports, or long distance friends from a vacation spot. Yet there are still fifty-five percent of adolescents who do in fact communicate with people who they do not know.…

Adults, as well as children being raised in today’s society are equipped with a vast array of advanced technological equipment so we are seeing a change in the way friendships evolve. The new type of friendships we see forming now are interpersonal communication with networking sites. This is what we refer to as digital friends and reference what is often called social-networking. “With the social-networking sites of the new century-Friendster and My Space were launched in 2003, Facebook in 2004- the friendship circle has expanded to engulf the whole of the social world, and in doing so has destroyed both its own nature and that of individual friendship itself. (Deresiewicz 151).”…
Technology can help you keep close friendships with friends who move away or with relatives who do not live near you. "You can watch your baby cousin grow up via Instagram and stay- up-to-date on hundreds of people at once" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). You can share daily experiences with photos on social media sites like Instagram or Snapchat, unlike with the time lag of writing letters and mailing them. Facetime is a good way to connect with people if you aren't able to see them face-to-face. Additionally, with heavy homework loads and busy extracurricular activity schedules, teens don't have time to physically be with their friends. Furthermore, in most families, both parents work and aren't available to transport their kids to friends' houses. "These platforms help people stay connected like never before" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). Through digital communication, teens can still check in with their friends electronically, while having busy schedules. Communicating on electronic devices allows you to engage with friends and family in real time at anytime.…
This is my second year at Winthrop. I transferred from Western Carolina University, and their English 101 class is like this course. It was about perfecting argument style writing, so I feel as though this class will partially feel like a repeat for me. However, we did not focus on learning to read, think, and write critically. I do believe this class will help with all of that, especially with reading. A lot of the time when I read, I feel like I am not understanding or comprehending what the author is saying very well. This could be due to lack of reading in the past several years, but also because of my lack of comprehension and critical reading skills.…

On the one hand, time spent online is time not spent elsewhere, including participating in social activities and communicating with family and friends. On the other hand, the Internet facilitates communication with geographically distant family and friends, and makes it easier to communicate frequently with those nearby. Two independent reviews of this research (Becker, 2000; Subrahmanyam, Kraut, Greenfield & Gross, 2000) have concluded that there are few documented social effects, either positive or negative (Kraut, Patterson, Lundmark, Kiesler, Mukopadhyay, & Scherlis, 1998; Kraut, Kiesler, Boneva, Cummings, Helgeson, & Crawford,…
Social networks, such as Facebook, were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. Many people use these networks to talk to their friends in other cities, states, or even other countries. There are many situations that do not allow the use of telephones; this is why social networking is preferable by many. These networks not only allow communication between friends,…
One of the main reasons social media was created was to link up with old friends near and far. In present day times we also use social media to form connections with new people. Through the use of forums and specialized pages on Facebook, you can connect with people who have interests similar to your own that you would not necessarily meet in real life and business connections also. Many people go on to build real friendships and even relationships with people they have met on social media. Only negative to this is that you never really know who you are talking to. Someone can claim to be one person, but in reality are lying to you about their identity the whole time.…
One of the new phenomenon’s of our generation is facebook, and with over four hundred million users on it, it is definitely not hard to add friends easily. However, Facebook is also an easy way to replace the outside world with spending all day surfing other peoples profiles. Facebook is a social networking website that was originally designed for college students, but is now open to anyone 13 years of age or older. Facebook users can create and customize their own profiles with photos, videos, and other information about themselves. Also, friends can browse the profiles of other friend’s pages and comment on their updated status or just write on the wall of the person. Facebook is a great website for finding old friends and connecting to new ones, however using the site too much can make people less inclined to interact face to face with other people.…
