Tips and Strategies for the Online Learner
I am quickly finding out that becoming a successful online learner is an acquired skill. It is most definitely a lot more challenging than I expected. In today’s world, flexibility and convenience of online learning tend to be attractive to students. “Flexible class schedules mean you can participate when it’s convenient for you, within an assigned period” (Walden University, 2014). Working and attending school full time is a definite challenge, but the easy access and accessibility of online learning has made all the difference. I started the program with a few skills that I knew would help me succeed. Self-discipline, persistence, and dedication with a goal in mind will perhaps be the key aspects to my personal success. I absorbed the importance of these qualities early on in nursing school as I struggled largely in cultivating new study habits. Self-discipline gave me the ability to stick to my resolutions and follow them through until completion. I believe self-discipline is one of the most important requirements in attaining goals.
In addition to these skills, there are a few learning strategies that are also crucial to online learning. Planning out my week and creating a goal to study eight hours weekly is a strategy I’m aiming to implement. I’ve devoted Sunday to gather my assignments for the week, and get organized. I use this time also to complete assigned reading materials and possibly even start creating a rough draft of my discussion post. I attempt to divide big tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks as to avoid feeling overwhelmed. I have also purchased a weekly planner that helps me visualize all my deadlines and focus on key priorities.

Individuals that engage in online learning lead busy lives and are part of multiple activities, so time management is one of the most important components for success.

I’ve thought about what my strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to online learning. One of my strengths has to be my dedication, when I really want something I dedicate my self and when there is something I truly care about I will do anything in my power to make it work. So knowing that I really want to get my degree and truly care about it I know that my dedication and drive will be my greatest strengths. Of course there are always weaknesses, one of them I believe was my time management. I have two kids, who are my life and take a lot of my time. Since starting orientation I have practiced setting aside my study time and really have done a great job in doing so. As long as I can keep a great schedule I will do fine in the time management area. Another weakness would have to be the online library, which will be a simpler weakness to overcome being that I have unlimited access to it and will spend much time getting used to it.…

Another challenge to me is remaining focused and organized in the online classroom environment. Since there is no weekly commitment to attend a classroom at a set day and time, it can be quite easy to allow yourself to fall behind on assignments. Since this is an open forum, if you do not have a personal commitment and ownership of the material you will not be successful.…

So, the first thing my academic counselor suggest I do a Discover Wheel to find out my learning style and my study habits would be what would make me or break me. Online education is different from actually being in a classroom due to the fact, you are on your own, there is no teacher there for support or a fellow classmate to tap on the shoulder and asked questions. Therefore, the completion of the discover wheel will let me know my strategies that very well…

I sometimes important things off until last minute typically because I get busy doing other things and forget about them .I usually think about them at the last minute and try to hurry to get things done. To be successful I will have to be self-motivated and self-disciplined to deal with online classes. As I said earlier since I don’t have a structured class schedule I will have to force myself to log into class at least daily to see what inform is available. Another thing is I will have to communicate more using the chat room. In a traditional class some teachers grade you on class participation but there is no seat number of responses you to give like with online. I will have to work just as hard or harder online as I would in a traditional class. Online courses are an easier way to attend school and not necessarily…

Who would have ever thought taking a college course would require one to learn how to learn? It is a good concept we normally undergo at a very young age. At the pre-school age one will find children learning their strength and weakness through their playtime. As adults we almost forget we have to learn how to learn to continue growth in our workplace, school, and in life. In our second week of online classes I learned strengths and weakness in my learning style with the aid of learning assessments, personality spectrums, and time management logs. In this paper, I intend to describe the various components of my learning style and outline a plan to improve my time management and study skills.…
