Why should people be careful about what they post and share online? The two articles “Narcissism on the Internet isn’t risk free,” and “Facebook photos sting Minn. high school students,” both give an indebt look into the reality of posting online. They both share a similar opinion as to why people, especially students, should be careful when they are online. In the article “Narcissism on the Internet isn’t risk free,” college professors examined the online world of social networking and discovered that many students weren’t as careful about posting stuff online as they should be. Similarly, a group of high school students posted themselves online at a party holding red solo cups. Therefore, the school enforced punishment upon the students

Mckinnell gives some examples about why people should be careful when they are sharing personal information on social media. For example, "A photo of your daughter, for instance, can tell a stalker where she parks her bike, which shortcut she takes home, and what school she attends"(Mckinnell). These kinds of situations give away valuable information of ourselves for someone to harm us. Therefore, the author makes me think that my use of social media has made my life to be unsafe. Also, social media has ultimate control of world, because it has become a tool to know where we are right now. I like Mckinnell's perspective on parents give a lot of freedom to their children at very young age without regarding all the risk they are putting…

We’re afraid, because our kids know things we don’t.” (Goldwasser, par. 7). Teenagers have the ability to decide what becomes popular through the use of social media and the internet. They are the main reason why Apple products have become so popular and common; they made movies like “High School Musical” popular. Through their use and time on social media they were able to make the movie “Juno” an Oscar winner, made MySpace worth five hundred and eighty million dollars. Goldwasser stated “Besides, we’re tired of having to ask them every time we need to find Season 2 of “Heroes,” calculate a carbon footprint or upload photos to Facebook.” (Goldwasser, par. 8). A major reason parents think that the internet is melting their kid’s brains is because they just don’t seem to know how to do certain things with the internet without having to ask for help from a teenager. Parents also believe that teenagers are consistently blogging about them. As the author said “teenagers today read and write for fun; its part of their social lives. We need to start celebrating this unprecedented surge, incorporating it as an educational tool instead of meeting it with punishing pop quizzes and suspicion.” (Goldwasser, par. 14). Adults need to be able to start trusting their kids that what they do on the internet is not…

There are many problems that can result from postings on the Internet. These range from humiliation to unfounded accusations and more. In her essay “The Flip Side of Internet Fame,” Jessica Bennett details problems that some people have experienced as a result of postings that others have made. She describes problems that happen because some websites permit anonymous posts. She also gives examples from the past that show some of the histories of public shaming. Rosen explains how individuals are constantly urged to market themselves to a world full of strangers via the Internet and its numerous social networking sites. They are expected to create a personal image that is seen as consistent and memorable. Many let out their thoughts and emotions hoping for a reassuring response from the audience. However, studies show that sharing too many personal details online may in fact have negative effects when it leads people to vent their feelings in a void, without the support of a receptive audience. Rosen also highlights how the Internet is creating an unbalanced relationship between liberty and security. He questions why people are more concerned with feeling connected than with the personal and social costs of exposure. Rosen discusses how “our conceptions of personal truthfulness has changed from sincerity to authenticity”(415). More and more people in today’s society have no problem disclosing intimate details to strangers. Some even create false images of themselves to appeal to others as trustworthy and intelligent. Rosen brings up the idea of “personal branding”, in which individuals present the best version of themselves in order to establish and maintain emotional connections with strangers. These personal branders thrive upon approval from the public, hoping to become more successful in their careers. Rosen states that amongst the chaos of everyone struggling to stand out as unique, personal branding…

It is a portal in which sleep does not exist and that at any time, day or night, an on slaughter of bulling occurs. It is difficult to say that social media is positive when it allows such things as bulling to occur. Rose mentions reading positive articles about different experiences where Facebook and other websites have came in handy to bring forth positive changes. It is easy to say, that for every article that Rose reads about the favorable efforts these websites can bring, that he will also be able to discover articles that state that the same websites have lead to teenage suicide and body issues. Even the good cannot out weigh the bad. In 2011 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey that stated 16.2% of kids had been bullied online…

Fleming provides example after example of how information provided by the user on MySpace and Facebook have ruined or altered people’s lives. Potential employers, law enforcement officials, colleges, universities, and others have used this information to help them with their decision-making regarding certain individuals. If the information available on site is not showing the individual in a positive light, the decisions made may be detrimental to the individual. She recognizes that colleges and universities across the nation offer practical tips for social media site users such as “Don’t post anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with your grandmother seeing.” (440) But she also understands that students are not following that advice. Fleming explains how difficult it is for colleges to keep an eye on their students’ online postings, and admits “there is no practical way for colleges to monitor the content of these sites, as students’ profiles and postings are changing constantly.” (440) Later in the article she justifies that reviewing a students’ profile page may be beneficial in providing clues to a person’s behavior. She concludes…

Historically, there has not been a communication medium as effective as the Internet. The Internet allowed users to combine mail, telephone, and mass media into one central area (Britz, 2013, p.4). As Britz stated in the book, the Internet was used for different purposes such as a social gathering place, a library, or a place to be alone (Britz, 2013, p.4). The Internet had resulted in a helpful tool for communication. However, internet could be a dangerous tool in the wrong hands. Unfortunately, the Internet was allowed for everyone including pedophiles, sexual predators, and narco-trafficers (Britz, 2013, p.4). Consequently, the Internet had been effective for multiple reasons to different types of users such as individuals, companies and so on. Nevertheless, it implied a risk for individuals and companies to be…
