Opening Night For Almost, Maine Play Summary
Opening night for Almost, Maine was Friday, November 18th at the Thomas H. Debolt Auditorium. Almost, Maine was written by an American actor named John Cariani. Friday night’s production was directed by Jonathan Gruich, our High School Theatre teacher, with the help of Ben Kemmerly, assistant director, Levana Ngo, lighting director, and Trinity Sullivan who was the stage manager. This play takes place on a nice, cold Friday night in the town of Almost, Maine. All throughout the play you see people that know each other for the longest time fall in love or start to have feelings of the other person. Each scene will have you awing or gasping from the actions that you just saw. Almost, Maine will make you want more, all of the scenes have a powerful …show more content…
For instance, Gayle and Lendall, Phil and Marci, and lastly Pete and Ginette. For they were probably the major characters because they all had problems in their relationship. The rest of the characters, like Rhonda and Dave, or Randy and Chad, I would consider to be minor characters because we only see a blossoming of their relationship. The role of Rhonda was probably the best out the entire because Wendy Nguyen did an amazing job play this role. She fit in with her character very well. It was as if Rhonda was one of Wendy’s alter egos because she made the role of Rhonda come to life. Now after watching this production of Almost, Maine I would not picture someone else as Rhonda. The actors mostly used a comedic style to the show, I think they tried really hard to be make the show funny. The actors did make it funny, but in my opinion some of them were trying too hard instead of just going with the flow while on the stage. They did respond to each other as if they were in actual relationship and dealing with those problems. Especially in the scene with Gayle and Lendall. She is trying to get all of her love back, but when she sees how much love she has given to him she does not believe it. When he told her that that was all the love she really gave him, he sounded kind of hurt that she did not believe him. The Gayle and Lendall reacted to each other in the scene was …show more content…
Every little thing went together, every little design had a purpose and went together. There was nothing that did not fit, all the items on stage had a meaning. The blue and green lights for the Northern Lights stood out to me the most because I, personally have always wanted to go see the Northern Lights. I think the Northern Lights was the element that tied everything together because when you are looking at something you have never seen before, like the Northern Lights, I feel like if you are or would be in a state of disbelief. Friday night was the first time an actual audience saw this version of Almost, Maine. The way this proscenium stage was set fit well with the set design. To me it sort of enhanced the story because I kind of close to the stage I could clearly see the actors reactions. The design of the set was clearly during winter on a snowy Friday night in Maine. The set design was appropriate to story, which helped me visualize what the actual town would like look at

The set being compacted towards the edges of the stage with a large open area allowed the setting of the play to easily present a small country town, iconic locations within a town on the edges of the stage gave the ever present vision of a small town. The large open area in the centre of the stage was adaptable and used during various scenes, although most notably, the outback scenes presenting a large open space opening the space compared to other scenes and indicating the environment base of the play. The use of footage of sand falling in-between scenes represented that time consistently progressed within the play, with each event leading to the larger events growing in impact on the play. Due the complex stage design spotlighting was used to draw focus to the performers, coloured lighting was also incorporated for ambient effects during scenes. Blocking on the set was made minimal to avoid wandering into separate scene locations although using spotlights and lighting position as well as props such as empty chairs were used to emphasise divide in characters with character interacting closely in aggressive and intermit moments. An example of conflict causing both intimacy and aggressive monuments is during Alan attempting to persuade the character Veronica a member of the historical society whom was involved in pro-acknowledgement campaigning to join him after having turned the town against her, a chair is left empty as a divide between the character while Alan attacks her ideals however once Alan decides a more friendly approach they sit beside each other as Alan attempts to persuade her to side with him. During this scene conversation between the characters was fairly hostile and consider of Alan denouncing Veronica’s ideals as she struggled to fight back against Alan’s judgement, this resulted in Alan looking down on her and placing himself…

The piece was extremely clever how they only used four actors during the entire show. This brings me onto costumes. The costumes in this production were very bare and essential for quick changes while on stage, and this gave the play a comic feel because they changed on the stage in front of the audience. Many times the costume was a plain suit and the actors played different characters by simplistically putting so a hat, coat or a prop. I enjoyed this because it helped me associate different characters with the little bit of costume they had.…

The stage set is a very minimalistic and representational. There are not many naturalistic items used. The only naturalistic parts in the play are linked with the horses, such as their reins, ploughs, buckets etc. There was a three-sided audience, which sat left right and centre. There are large wings for the entrance of the tank and the horses. The stage floor was painted many shades of grey and black. This was creating a textured effect and it represented the farm land in Devon, the dirty muddy trenches in France, and the sea. The set was a composite, e.g. the house was not fully shown, there was…

I enjoyed the play because the story and music is very interesting, unique and entertaining. I have seen the play before in Las Vegas and I must say that the cast in Las Vegas was much better than the one I saw on Thursday night. The reason is because it went more in-depth with the story and also played every single hit that the band had made. Also, the singers in Las Vegas were much more professional and sounded better because the actor portraying Frankie Valli did not have such a high pitched voice as the one in Curran Theatre. My favorite composition from the band was Beggin because the tempo and beat was so fast-paced and it was impressive how the band had bright stage lights and fascinating dance moves. The music contained catchy rhythms and beats. Some notes would stretch out to make a nice vocal sound and some were just quick beats from the drums. The staging was very flashy because they had different stage lights with different colors for each part of the story. The costumes were very well suited. They actors wore fancy suits and some had a fancy top hot to match their costume. I thought the the whole play went fairly well and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. The music was pleasant and relaxing, the actors were spot on with no mistakes during the show and the crowd was very enthusiastic. The only part I had a slight…

All the elements in the show went perfectly with the actors, the sets, and the lighting. The whole stage was used and the performers moved around throughout the entire stage. Though when I saw the play for the first time, I realized that the set that I saw was only a small part of the entire set. In addition to the the pox house that was set up with an amazing amount of detail with all of the little trinkets on the shelves, the lights and sound effects also added to the level of greatness. The colors of the lights would accurately match the mood of a scene or set the tone. This is essentially what lights are supposed to do in a play, but it is sometimes overlooked in small school productions. With regards to the sound effects, I was a bit taken aback by the real life aspect of it.…

The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…

Almost Maine is a play by John Cariani and directed by Lesley Tutnick-Machbitz. Narrating nine short stories taken place in a small Maine town at the same time. Each story has a different theme varied of love, loss, and hope. With six show dates at Glendale Community College Performing Art Center, I was given the opportunity to be part of the run crew. I was able to observe the growth of the actors and see them transform into their characters through behavior, movement, and voice.…

On November 20th I went to the Black Box theatre to see the play Seminar. It was a small production, and there were only five actors. Going into the play, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard the play was a bit raunchy, with explicit dialogue and provocative scenes. The play started out with four actors portraying college graduate writers. I loved how realistic the setting was; it really looked like somebody’s real apartment. The actors did very well portraying emotion, and every thing they did and said I could relate to. At one point, a girl was eating real ice cream and complaining on the couch to her friend. I thought it was funny how every girl could relate to that scene. I also liked that the actor had no problem devouring ice cream on top of memorizing her lines and acting at the same time. I would find it hard not to focus on anything other than the delicious taste of the ice cream.…

I really enjoyed how minimalist the set was for this show because while the overall setting of the South was important, the interaction of the characters was made the focal point of the show. It was a good choice because it reinforced the theme of getting to know someone else’s side of the story that the play showcased. It also help aid the fact that the play was told in a flashback, and that all the events had already occurred. It was a good style choice for this…

Set design was quite cute; they had an interesting rotating platform that provided for any scene, even if it the scene was taking place in a different place. Palm trees and greenery were placed all across the stage, which made it more believable that this was taking place on an island instead of a stage. Although there were not too many props, the ones that were used, such as the car, were good and came on at the right…
