M.V. VALE LIWA belongs to OMAN SHIP MANAGEMENT COMPANY bulk carrier fleet. The employment for VALE LIWA is the long term charter to VALE INTERNATIONAL. Vessel is a VLOC (4, 00,000DWT) gearless bulk carrier with seven cargo holds to carry iron ore fines grade PPFT.
PREPARATION OF HOLDS
Prior to hold cleaning, it must be understood that there is a need for a complete discharge of cargo, especially that the vessel is gearless. Otherwise, difficulties will be presented of sweepings being left in the hold, particularly with iron ore which is not soluble in water. Hence, officers will make sure to compel or persuade the stevedores to discharge all the sweepings. Stevedores are often willing, if asked, to return to a hold where discharge has been completed, to remove sweepings gathered by the crew. They may even be prepared to leave a grab resting in the hold for a while for sweepings to be shoveled into.
PRE-WASHING
Holds preparation requires careful considerations regarding aspects such as washing, cleaning testing bilges and hold inspections. The following procedures should be taking prior to washing cargo holds:
Holds swept thoroughly after discharge of previous cargo and residues removed. Residues left on deck are kept covered.
Holds and internals checked for damages.
Bilge wells /Strum Boxes are cleared of cargo spillage. Bilge Cover plate is put back in place.
Hold bilge sounding pipes, temperature pipes are checked for obstructions. Refrain from washing the hold if adjacent holds are not free of cargo, or if the bulkhead in the adjacent hold is not clear of cargo.
The bilge line to be spoon flanged from the Engine room for holds with cargo during washing.
Bilges of holds with cargo shall be sounded frequently during washing.
Prior pumping out bilge water, ensure local regulations (E.g. Discharge of Cargo residues within 3 miles from the coast) are not violated.
