As we can interpret from the book, John Purcell had always been very distant from the rest of his family. Little Johnny Purcell shows very little emotion towards his father and has little to no interest whatsoever in trying to communicate with him or by any means, building a relationship. An example that proves this statement would be when the author quoted “he crowded as far away from him as he could get, trying to associate himself with the boy and his father on the other side of him.”. A reason for John’s drinking is more than likely related to a coping mechanism perhaps somehow related to the war, trying to escape the reality, his son, there are many factors we could take into consideration. From what we have read, we know for a fact that John has not a clue on how to be a father figure and on how little he pays attention to the little things in life other than himself . This can be proven from this certain quote in the story like when John was thinking to himself “ he realized that he didn’t even know what position his own son played, or even the name of the team.”. This can be linked to a certain aspect of life that we don’t always pay attention to. Remembering the little details about things, dates, times, people is a concept in which we all sometimes take for granted.
