Opposing Viewpoints in Context – Renewable Energy
There has been debating among people in the United States on how the best energy supply. Some people suggests that the United States should in fact decrease its dependency on oil and begin to invest in an alternative energy source like renewable energy, such as wind and solar power – Go green. Others have contended saying that converting over to a new power source would not only be expensive but it is unnecessary because the United Sates already has a sustainable energy source, we just have to search for the resources in unexplored areas within the country and Alaska and the Gulf Coast. Personally, I side with the individuals that agree that the United States invest in an alternative energy source. Renewable energy is already being practiced in some areas of the United States and it has been proven to be more cost effective and healthier for the environment.
Perceptual Blocks and Habits
An interrelationship is defined as having a mutual relationship (Merriam-Webster, 2013). The common denominator between culture and visual entertainment media is influence. Cultures have been influenced by what they view on television and in movies. What people see on the big screen is often they life that they would like to live or the only option they have in society. Visual entertainment media is influenced on what they either perceive is going on in societies or what they would like to see happen or transition into the future.
There are several movies and television programs that support my belief of the interrelationships between culture and visual entertainment media. For instance, take the movie American History X, a film directed in 1998 by Tony Kaye from a screenplay written by David McKenna. This movie dealt with prejudice, hatred and other negative issues and the fight for a brother to help his younger brother overcome them through his testimony and life experiences (Ebert, 1998).
Positive and negative influences. Visual entertainment media has a major influence on society and American culture. Such influences can lead to positive and negative adaptations of social and economic behaviors. There are negative influences displayed in some movies and television programs that people seem to adapt to. For instance the television shows like Basketball Wives, Love and Hip Hop and Bridezilla’s all display and influence negative behavior. They promote sexuality, violence, drinking and using profanity. This has taken a toll on our society. The proof is in the ratings and the actions of the people. These are high rated programs and very popular among young people who believe that this is what life is all about, therefore they mimic what they see on television.
All Visual entertainment media is not negative. There have been several films and programs that promote good behavior, citizenship, morals and values. I personally grew up watching several programs myself. There are also programs that can help stimulate the minds of individuals, causing them to think and be more rational in their everyday practices.
Conclusion. Visual entertainment media both reflects and influence social behavior and attitudes. Social behaviors and attitudes are often learned from what people see on visual media. Such behaviors and attitudes are also drafted by an imagination of someone who is faced in a similar situation or wants someone to experience it.
