Slavery was mainly used in the Southern colonies since their main focus was agriculture, were crops such as tobacco needed to be worked. During the American Revolution, while the Colonies were fighting for their independence from England; the question of morality of slavery arose. This lead to the 1st significant opposition to slavery developed by the Quakers who called for equality among all men. When Missouri wanted to enter in the US as a slave state, the Missouri Comprise was reformed to keep the balance. It stated that is Missouri entered as a slave state, then Maine had to become a free state and any Louisiana Purchase territory had to prohibit slavery. Soon after California sparked a nationwide crisis in 1850 when it petitioned to join the US as a free state, because there was a threat to the balance of power. Stephen Douglas developed the Compromise of 1850. It stated that territories won in the Mexican- American War could now vote on whether to be a slave or free state, California would enter as a Free State, slave trade was eliminated in DC, and Fugitive Slave Act was added, which said Sheriffs could use bystanders, including abolitionists to help capture fugitive slaves. Stephen Douglas wrote the Kansas- Nebraska Act, this act would invalidate the Missouri Compromise. Douglas wanted the people of the territories to decide whether or not to be a free or slave

The Virginia Plan, drafted by James Madison and proposed at the Constitutional Convention by Edmund Randolph, was to install a national government with a bicameral legislature and was to be comprised by representative that held seats, in the new congress, in proportion to each states population. After the delegates at convention accepted the Virginia Plan as a basis to build on the national government, debate quickly arose against the share of distributed legislative power the northern states would have over the southern states to make national policy. This was due to the northern states having much larger populations than those of the south, but since the southern states had amassed a large number of slaves, it was believed that the southern representation in congress should also include the slave population. The northern states were opposed to this idea given that slaves were generally…

The free states and slave states overall were well-known, and it looked as if to be peace between them. The United States had a large region of land to be established with the triumph over Mexico. With this reimbursement arose the matter of slavery and whether these new lands would set up a slave system. In the article Compromise of 1850, the author talks about how the” Divisions over slavery in territory gained in the Mexican-American War (1846-48) were resolved in the Compromise of 1850. It consisted of laws admitting California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery in each to be determined by popular sovereignty, settling a Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute in the former’s favor, ending the slave trade in Washington, D.C., and making it easier for southerners to recover fugitive slaves.”…

It meant that the people who lived in the territories would have to decide on the issue of slavery. Instead of creating compromise, the Kansas-Nebraska Act divided the country even further. Stephan Douglas who proposed the Kansas and Nebraska act in 1854 thought that popular sovereignty should settle the dispute over whether or not slavery should be allowed in the Nebraska territory. However with the compromise of 36° 30' the territory was legally closed to slavery. To settle this Douglas voughed to repeal the Missouri Compromise line and establish popular sovereignty as the means of how the territories settle their issue on slavery. Not every one agreed on this issue. Parts of the North saw the act as a plan to turn the territories directly into slave states, and this therefore made them very weary and spiteful. This over all ill natured feeling spilled over into the population as the fate of Kansas hung in the balance after the act became a law in May of…

These tensions became especially acute when congress began to consider whether western lands acquired after the Mexican War would permit slavery under popular sovereignty. In 1849 California requested to enter the Union as a free state. Adding more Free State senators to Congress would destroy the balance between slave and free states that had existed since the Missouri compromise of 1820. The compromise essentially erased the effects of the compromise by allowing the balance of free and slave state to potentially be…

The Compromise of 1850 was a series of measures passed by Congress to resolve sectional tensions. Congress admitted California to the Union as a free state. And organize the territories of New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah without mention of slavery. It also paid Texan $10 million to relinquish land claims in New Mexico and abolished the slave trade in the District of Columbia (but not slavery) while enacted a law requiring the return of fugitive slaves. (Martin 369)Douglas who pushed the Compromise of 1850, and then stated he “would never make a speech of slavery again” also proposed that the area west of Iowa and Missouri (which was set aside as permanent Indian reservation) be organized as the Nebraska territory to white settlers.
