Protestant Reformation commenced in the early 16th century, and rooted on its longstanding developing dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church leadership. The Church of Rome’s hierarchy stood as a hindrance for those millions of people who searched for a religious experience and were unsatisfied with the way things were going. What made the faithful unsatisfied with their religious institution was due to the awareness that the Roman popes were more concerned with temporal power and material wealth contrary to the…
The Catholic Church of the 16th century was perceived as being corrupt and unpopular due to its social hierarchy within its society of ordained men, and their abuse of power to take advantage of the laypeople and their strong faith to extort money out of them for their own greedy purposes. The sources A, B, C and D all depict this corruption in one form or another.…
In this document, Luther calls Rome a brothel and compares it to Babylon. His language in this document is scathing, sarcastic, and brutal. However, the people now viewed the conflict between Luther and the Church as one between Satan and God. This was Luther’s official break with Rome.…
During the 1920s and early 1930s, the Protestants held many of the key positions in business and politics while the Catholics were predominately the working class in society. There was a considerable division between the classes in society after…
I agree the Reformation was political because it involved everybody. Charles V, the peasant class even the Pope was included in this religious conflict. After Luther’s reveal of the New Testament Charles V was too busy running an empire, but the peasants wanted in to the new way. But unfortunately unlike Jan Hus and John Wycliffe Luther did not care for the peasants. The Reformation was the Protestant Reformation and the result of that was the Counter Reformation.…
Religion greatly affected people in power, as well as the people in general. The Catholic versus Protestant conflict lead to many changes of what religion was in power. For instance, Henry, a Catholic, wanted to divorce his wife. Catholic law did not permit divorce so Henry asked the Pope to annul his marriage. The pope refused and Henry was no longer a part of the Catholic Church because he decided to break from it. In doing so, he set up a Protestant church called the Church of England. Another example is when Elizabeth I took the throne. She was a Protestant who had replaced the former queen, who was Catholic. This ¨renewed the rivalry with Roman Catholic Spain¨ (page 51). King Phillip assembled a fleet of warships in hopes of forcing Elizabeth from the throne. English ships sank Phillips fleet called the Spanish Armada. England and France could now found colonies in America because the defeat of the Armada changed…
Thesis:The Puritans were a widespread and diverse group of individuals who took a stand for religious purity in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. They had been strongly against the Catholic Church. As a matter of fact the Puritan colonists believed that English Reformation had not gone far enough and that the Church of England, also known as the Anglican church, was still tolerating too many practices that were associated with the Church of Rome they wanted greater reforms to do away with all the traces and the effects of the Roman Catholic Church. As a matter of fact the faith of the Puritans was not to separate entirely from the Church of England.…
In Baroque Era, you can see the style throughout various of life forms in that time, for the purpose of this response, we are focusing on the architect and musical style of the Baroque Era. Bach’s composition No. 5 (Brandenburg), has polyphonic texture and uses the string and woodwind instrument family. You can hear the violins, flute, and harpsichord in this piece. The musical form of this piece is a three-part ritornello, and there are 3 movements. The movements go: (1) fast, (2) slow, and (3) fast. You can see the same type of texture used in the architect of the Town Hall in Munich, Germany. There are many individual layers to this structure that contribute to making this building a wonderful sight. Starting on at ground level, the Town Hall have these arch ways, followed by numerous amount of windows, and ending with pointed structures. This structure resembles a cathedral and it fits the Baroque style of music because the music…
These include differing mindsets toward political parties, war, and ethics. For instance, the philosophy behind the American Dream was stoked by the Protestant work ethic, or the early belief that following Jesus’s teachings would sway one’s fate after death. Protestants have accumulated a reputation for “work ethic, moral rigor, and social solidarity” (source). This influence, in turn affects other day to day activities. For example, parties. Catholics are usually more prone to larger and more frequent parties, out of the shared strong bond derived from the traditions associated with the faith. Additionally, parties associated with Catholicism tend to be more conservative whereas protestant parties tend to lean towards more secular positions. (source). Political views also then have a domino effect on larger world issues including the decisions regarding war. For instance, when concerning the more recent war in Iraq, both Catholic and Protestant denominations initially denounced the violence as unjustified. Once war was initiated though, the Catholic church tried to support American efforts, even instructing some priests to avoid the topic in sermons. (source). Therefore, different approaches of interpreting the teachings of Jesus result in slightly varied day to day philosophies and…
Even Luther had to use the power of the German Princes to spread his religion, which then made these princes more powerful (Britannica). This is a key example that even these new denominations based completely on religious intentions, utilized power and politics advantageously to propagate their new ideas. The greatest example of politics in The Reformation is the Church of England. Comparatively, masses in The Church of England were basically identical to that of a Catholic procession. If there are no differences in theology, that implies that the church was started solely on politics (http://anglicansonline.org/resources/essays/whalon/AngRC-diffEng.html). The story of the creation of this Anglican Church is actually quite heinous. The church was created by Henry VIII when the pope would not grant the rights to get married to another wife who could bear a male heir (http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/Christianity/cofe/cofe_1.shtml). This is solely political, the man who was in charge, the pope, would not grant something to someone else in power, therefore the other man created his own entity. This exemplifies how The Reformation was both a religious and a political movement.…
Music has developed a lot over the years. Classical music has evolved in a more gradual manner with a number of smaller revolutionary steps along the way. In the 9th to 14th centuries the development of music was documented in a physical form. This was where music could now be communicated efficiently, and succeeding generations would know something about the music of their ancestors. There where demands of the church that required a musical notation, and so the earliest written music was largely in Church music called Hymns. The plainsong of this time was still singlehanded, but that’s when the new developments were starting to appear.…
The Baroque Era lasted from 1600 to 1750. It incorporated bold, powerful statements and the music was written for specific instruments, which was different from the Renaissance Era up to 1600. Also, the Baroque Era developed figured bass (basso continuo) and included improvisation which allowed for contrasting sections. One influential composer during the Baroque Era was J.S Bach. Bach was an involved musician who composed mainly to meet the needs of the positions he held. For example, as a church organist, he wrote works mainly for organ but also harpsichord, as well as cantatas for church, chorales, concertos, and chamber works. His compositions contained ornamentation that was typical in music during the Baroque Era, such as trills and…
During the end of the sixteenth century to the mid eighteenth century, the Baroque Era prospered in Europe and its provinces. This section studies the Baroque expressions and the political setting against which they created. The writing of this period incorporated various subjects and structures, some recognizable yet numerous new and inventive. As the government developed progressively absolutist the theater entered into a golden age in France. Three playwrights written by Pierre Corneille, Jean Racine, and the comedic satirist Jean-Baptiste Poquelin also known by his stage name Moliere transformed French dramatic literature. In England, Stuart…
The late medieval Catholic Church faced monumental crises during the Avignon papacy, the Great Schism, the Conciliar period, and the Renaissance papacy. The leadership of the pope was called into questions due to inappropriate behaviors such as, corruption and political manipulation. Many laity and intellectual felt a sense of spiritual crisis. As a result, criticism of the church gradually rose. By 16th century, religious movements and protests were spreading throughout Europe. Lutheran, Zwinglian, Calvinist, and Anabaptism were examples of different religious protests against the Catholic Church. All those protests were later known as the Protestant Reformation. In return, the Catholic Church responded with a Counter-Reformation, which led…
