Imagine being isolated from the world and everyone else for being black, being mistreated for not being the same as everyone else, or even not being able to follow your dreams because you’re a women, these are the issues That Steinbeck introduced to us in the book Mice of Men. In the book there was many issues and the ones I saw were the most important and that were still to this day happening, were Crook racial slur problem, Lennie’s mental health issues, and Curl’s wife issue in regard to being unhappily stuck with Curly instead of perusing her dreams.
The issue of Racism was Strongly Contributed in the book Mice of men through the Character Crook who lived in the Barn with the Horses for being Black. With this the author Steinbeck …show more content…
manages to show us how Mal this issue was back then and shows scenarios on where they pick on Crook for being what they called a ‘Nigger’. In the book Lennie had went on Wondering and stumble upon Crooks room, but he wasn’t what we called pleasant. “Maybe you guys better go. I ain't sure I want you in here no more. A colored man got to have some rights even if he don’t like em” This quote Shows how Crook knew the little rights he had but felt they were being violated by then being in there so he kicks them out. A big issues that I saw in the book but that wasn’t mention about Crooks unfairness was that in the book the character Candy states that when he got hurt or lost his arm, Curly’s dad paid him well and guaranteed him his job but crook not even once mentioned he got helped for getting kicked in the back by a horse. In the article ‘Mental health and race’ It said that human rights issues were common mostly because ‘poverty, stigma, and racism’, like in crook’s case for not being treated for his incident because his color.
Another Human issue that I find to be important is Lennie’s, a man around his 30’s with a condition regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. Lennie in the book played the best friend of George, who is the family friend who promised to take care of Lennie. In the book it made us see how no one really understood what Lennie had they were being ignorant and treated him like the others even though Lennie wasn’t like the others. ”When the sound of the footsteps had died away, George turned on Lennie. “So you wasn't gonna say a word. You was gonna leave your big flapper shut and leave me do the talkin'. Damn near lost us the job." Lennie stared helplessly at his hands. "I forgot, George.” Yea, you forgot. You always forget, and' I got to talk you out of it." He sat down heavily on the bunk. "Now he's got his eye on us. Now we got to be careful and not make no slips. You keep your big flapper shut after this." He fell morosely silent.” In this quote you see how George was trying to concentrate so hard to not mess this up, but he still did by not answering. George is now yelling at him for not talking to the boss and almost costing them the job like if Lennie knew better but he didn’t. Throughout the story we learned to understand that there was nothing that could help Lennie with his disability and that’s what caused him his life. In the article ‘ Mental Health and Race’ It states how and what could be the reasons to not get treated like ‘poverty’ and lack of Information and I think that’s what George needed to be able to help Lennie and not to move in a suburb area by themselves.
Steinbeck’s portrays women in a very negative way through the character and only women in the book Curly’s wife, a women who didn’t get her full rights.
Through this the author wants to give us a hint of how women were treated. In the book we got a bit of a flashback of what Curly’s wife dreams and how they didn’t come true because of negativity through her mother who always told her she “can’t do it”. Back then human rights issues was a big problem because it prohibited women’s from doing what they wanted and follow their dreams and Steinbeck show it through Curlys wife. “If I catch one man, and he's alone, I get along fine with him. But just let two of the guys get together an’ you won't talk. Jus’ nothing but mad. You're all scared of each other, that’s what. Ever’ one of you’s scared the rest is going to get something on you.” In this quote it shows how after not meeting her dream how miserable Curly’s wife is that she just goes around trying to entertain herself. Everyone around knows what she’s really capable of and she got herself a bad reputation that they call her ‘jail bait’ or ‘tart’.
Throughout the world there are human right Violations that are still part of the everyday life, and we learned from the book Mice of Men that these violations have been around for many, many years. Mice of Man thought me that sometimes we have no control over our issues and that sometimes there’s no solutions to it, but not by choice but because of everything around us takes a
