Abstract
An effective leader infuses a sense of positivity and influences others to reach goals, just as Oprah Winfrey does with her peers and fans. As an ambitious African American female, Oprah has built a billion dollar empire from social and network media. Oprah’s journey to fame began with her gift for speaking, impeccable listening skills and compassionate nature. She has evolved into a powerful celebrity, entrepreneur, actress and philanthropist who is dedicated to helping others by using her fame. She has proven herself as an outstanding positive role model for women, children and families around the world.

Influential Leader, Oprah Winfrey
One of today’s most renowned leaders and philanthropists, Oprah Winfrey has achieved unsurpassed success, and became a leader for women, children, and families worldwide. In her own words, Oprah Winfrey’s philosophy of philanthropy demonstrates her commitment to giving: “Think about what you have to give, not in terms of dollars because I believe your life is about service. It’s about what you came to give the world, to your children, to your family” (Johnson, 2013). Oprah has overcame many obstacles throughout her lifetime and has become one of today’s most recognized humanitarians.
Oprah Gail Winfrey (originally born as “Orpah”, but her name was later changed for pronunciation reasons) was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954 to young, low-income parents. While Oprah’s mother moved north in search of work, Oprah stayed behind with her grandmother who encouraged her to begin reading early, attending church regularly, and memorizing Bible verses to read aloud at service.
