Optimists take proactive steps to protect their physical and mental health as well as focusing on goals that benefit their socioeconomic standing. "The trait of optimism may provide cognitive, coping, and contextual resources that promote better mental health" (Carver, et al., 2010. p. 880 pp. 2). Optimism is a behavioral trait that describes people who look for the positive in a situation. Optimism can help people cope in negative situations and lead to greater well-being. Optimists ability to cope with negative situations gives them increased opportunity to succeed and live healthier lives, compared to pessimists, because they believe a positive result is more likely. Comparatively, optimists should be measured the same against pessimists on a scale of very pessimistic to very optimistic with the majority of people falling somewhere in the middle (Carver, et al., 2010). People display varying degrees of copability when confronted with positive and negative situations and tend to react based on their acquired behavior. Past experiences can affect the response of a person to either pessimism or optimism depending on whether the cause was permanent or temporary (Peterson & Seligman, 1984).     In Optimism and Physical Health, there was a study conducted to find out the relationship between optimism and physical health outcomes. According to their findings, the data suggests that optimism is a significant predictor of physical health. I would have to agree with this study and I find it validating. One thing that I found interesting in the article was the significance of pessimism and physical health. We learned from the study that optimism can have a positive effect on physical health but we also learn that pessimism can have a negative effect on physical health. According to the article Optimism and Physical health, “It may well be the case that it is the presence or absence of pessimism that is important in determining physical health outcomes rather than the presence or absence of optimism”(p.247). What this is telling me is that having the presence of pessimism can have a more negative effect on physical health rather than the positive effect optimism has on physical health. To summarize, “In general, it is clear from this review that optimism is related to physical health. It is also clear that the link between optimism and health is stronger for subjective health outcomes than for objective health outcomes” (p. 248).     According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head.     Optimism can be both a positive characteristic and a negative depending on how a person applies it to their life. One might think that optimism is solely a positive characteristic, but this is not always the case. Optimism may be described by researchers as a personal trait, this is termed dispositional optimism. In this perspective of optimism a person has an expectation in which a person will have more positive events and a small amount of negative events that will have to be dealt with at times. Another view of optimism is called explanatory style, in which the focus is more on how a person might explain a negative event in a way the keeps them positive. Optimism also can be a negative thing in such aspects of unrealistic optimism. In this aspect of optimism expectations are often so high for a positive outcome that they defy reality. This can easily be described with an example of a person who thinks that they will win the lottery, when in reality the odds are stacked against them. A person with this type of thinking might commonly say that “It won’t happen to me”, when in reality it is more than possible. Optimistic people tend to be healthier and less stressed, and deal with life’s stressors more productively as compared to a pessimistic outlook on life. Hope is another aspect of optimism that can have a positive bearing on one’s life. Hopefulness can create more flexible thinking adding to one’s ability to solve problems. It also builds self-motivation, and reinforces the benefits of optimism. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary online defines hope as cherishing a desire with anticipation. One can see how optimism and hope are different yet interrelated. Were optimism is more expectation that more positive events will occur as compared to negative, or one’s perspective for how they explain negative events.
