The majority of people tend to have a dominant eye so that even when both eyes are open, the dominant eye processes and transmits information to the brain a few milliseconds faster than the other, as said on the website sportsci.org. The scientific purpose of my project was to determine if the majority of the population has the same eye and hand dominance. This project relates to my future interests because I am very interested in Optometry. Optometry is the practice or profession of examining the eyes for visual defects and prescribing corrective lenses. Studies have shown that differences in hand/eye dominance do not correlate with performance differences in basic laparoscopic skills. Another study also shows that shooting a basketball is not conclusively affected by crossed hand-eye dominance. Experiments testing the accuracy of basketball players shooting the ball through a variety of visual stimuli showed that, individuals tend to adjust to whatever dominant hand-eye combination they possess. Shooting a basketball simply reflects their hand-eye skills in general. However it can affect your accuracy in archery. This is because the dominant eye will always command the sight line when both eyes are open. When the bow is sighted with the dominant eye, everything works as it should.
