“Spanish-challenged and pura Latina”(p. 61) is the final, but most important statement written at the conclusion of “Se Habla Espanol,” written by Tanya Barrientos (2011). This is a powerful memoir in which she shares her childhood experiences of self-hatred and the consequences of failing to identify with her own culture. Mrs. Barrientos is of Guatemalan descent, but she is unable to speak her native tongue, Spanish. Her inability is a result of her parent’s decision to speak only English in the home with the sole purpose of ensuring that their children would be fully immersed in American culture, which would provide them with a better chance to be successful (p. 57).…
The landowners figure out vigorous ways to elude the workers, by changing set prices or charging excessive prices on the plantation cantina, where many workers would go and drink away their suffering. Menchu was raised to work for no pay until she was old enough to be considered as an adult. Later on throughout Rigoberta’s life, her father was killed for organizing peaceful resistance and then guerilla revolts against powerful land barons. She herself was exiled and became an activist in Mexico, crusading to reform her homeland. Her autobiography is a chronicle not just of her ideals but of her life as a Native woman. From Mechues’ view, the Indians are good and the ladinos are bad. Her extreme polarity is the result of mistreatment by the ladinos she has worked for or encountered in her life. One of the strengths of this book is the historic content. The author recorded a great deal of history about the life of the Pueblo Indians before the Spanish conquest. Customs and rituals were cleverly depicted. The story was told of not just what the Indians did, but also gave some premise as to why. The frequent explanations gave appreciable insight into the lives of the Pueblo Indians. Several traditional stories were included which illustrated what the Indians believed their genesis to be. The stories provided an engaging backdrop to the book. Their traditions were portrayed in a neutral light, without signifying a positive or negative influence on their way of life.…

Las Casas’ account depicts the terrible and inhumane actions that the Spaniards inflicted upon the indigenous people. He made it very clear that the indigenous people were far from deserving of this torturous treatment. He describes them as “among the purest, the most innocent, and the most intelligent.” (p.9) Las Casas points out that other Spaniards had similar feelings for the indigenous people. Some of the Spaniards described them as “the most blessed on Earth.” (p.9) After Las Casas established the fact that the indigenous people were far from deserving of the treatment they received due to their innocence, he described of how horrific the torture methods were. When describing how the Spaniards treated the indigenous people he says, “they treated them worse than beasts, with less regard than one treats a pile of manure in the road” (p.11) Las Casas makes it very evident that the Spaniards had no regard for the indigenous people and went to extreme measures to torture them.…
Lakota, a word meaning ‘allies or friends’ were religious people. They turned to the stars, using naked eye observations, for guidance from the spirits. The stars tell stories of their creation and hold information pertaining to birth and the sun dance rituals. Lakota people cherish their oral stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. Overall they embrace religion in all aspects of their life. For them religion encompassed their entire being and was integrated in their daily lives.…
Shaki, or Napoleon A. Chagnon’s 15 month enculturation with the Yanomamo tribe, Bisaasi-teri is characterized by fear, discomfort, loneliness, nosiness, and invaluable experiences through relationships and modesty about human culture. Chagnon documents the experience through the struggle and discovery surrounding his proposed research, as his lifestyle gradually comes in sync with the natural functions of his community. Much of his focus and time was consumed by identification of genealogical records, and the establishment of informants and methods of trustworthy divulgence. Marriage, sex, and often resulting violence are the foremost driving forces within Yanomamo, and everything that we consider part of daily routine is completely unknown and inconsequential to them. Traveling between neighboring tribes, he draws conclusions about intertribal relations, especially concerning marriage and raiding. Chagnon deals with cultural complexity that takes time to decipher, and in process, potential risk. Confronted with seemingly trivial situations, they often become unexpected phenomena and Chagnon’s adherence to documentation is amazing. He encounters personal epiphanies that I find intriguing, related to privacy and hygiene. This report becomes an inspiring document of an extreme anthropologic lifestyle as much as it is a cultural essay.…
Just like every other culture, the Cheyenne had traditions and lifestyles. The Cheyenne’s land consisted of grass - covered prairies, because the Cheyenne had vast stretches of land, a good war pony became a man’s most precious possession. The Cheyenne lived in the areas of present day: Minnesota, Oklahoma, Montana, and some parts of Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming, so the tribe had many hot summers and cold winters. The Cheyenne lived in tepees, a tepee was made of wooden poles covered in weather - proof buffalo hides, because they were quick to put up and easy to take apart. In the story, the author is getting pulled in various directions. Rodriguez wants to stay true to his Mexican culture for his parents' sake claiming they, “...grow distant, apart, no longer speak,” but also wants to belong in American culture where his education has driven him to a position not many Mexicans get to or have to opportunity to be (Rodriguez 105). This story confronts the idea that anyone can succeed as long as they are willing to sacrifice their cultural identity in the process.…
When analyzing Gloria Anzaldua’s writing “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” it is important to look at her background. She comes from a very diverse background; her parents were immigrants, she was born in south Texas, and she identifies herself as a Chicana feminist. The different discourse communities seen through her writing is the struggle she has between the different languages she has to adapt to around different people in her life. Writing from the borderlands between American, Mexican, Spanish, Indian, Chicano, and Mestiza culture, Anzaldua creates a representation of the wide range of forces within herself and the culture from which comes.…
Barrientos audiences are anyone who struggles with fitting in society just she do. When Barrientos expressed her disagreement of American society’s alleged of Latino being Mexican to her father, he sent her on a vacation to Mexico and after seeing how beautiful Mexico is, adjusted Barrientos negative understanding of Hispanics. “I found out that he was right, I loved the music, the art, and the architecture. “He’d planted a seed of pride, but it would take years for me to figure out how to nurture it” (85). Barrientos limitation of speaking Spanish hinders her bonding with her origin because Spanish aside from English was a way that Latinos connected. Barrientos was left questioning how she would fit in as Latino if she could not speak proper Spanish.…
In the southwestern United States, on 16 million acres (6,475,000 hectares) of land stretching from northeastern Arizona throughout adjacent northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah, the land of the Navajo Nation stands proud. The tenacity of the Navajo people has proven to take them from the brink of annihilation, through its establishment as a sovereign nation in 1868, to its current place as the largest reservation in the United States. This quiet, pastoral society rests on the matrilineal kinship system, although egalitarian relationships exist between Navajo men and women. The extended family included husband and wife, unmarried children, married daughters, sons-in-law, and unmarried grandchildren, who traditionally all lived together in camps. Among the Navajo, women are as likely to own sheep as men and their participation in herding, shearing, and butchering is no different. Their status is further elevated by their wool-weaving abilities and the artistry of their blankets (Nowak & Laird, 5.2). Since the central symbol of Navajo social organization is motherhood, a relationship between motherhood and sheep is formed and even though sheep are owned by individuals, the herds are kept communally within a matrilocal residential group (Nowak & Laird, 2010). The change from a subsistence economy to a wage economy among the Navajo is a direct result of white contact that disrupted their traditional way of life (Native, 1998), however, in the face of contemporary challenges, Navajo women remain respected for their wisdom and knowledge and still retain their roles as the carriers of their native culture. Their ability to adapt and adjust to societal opportunites, while concurrently reclaiming cultural traditions, is the glue of the Navajo Nation.…
As a young child, Rodriguez finds comfort and safety in his noisy home full of Spanish sounds. Spanish, is his family's' intimate language that comforts Rodriguez by surrounding him in a web built by the family love and security which is conveyed using the Spanish language. "I recognize you as someone close, like no one outside. You belong with us, in the family, Ricardo." When the nuns came to the Rodriquez's house one Saturday morning, the nuns informed the parents that it would be best if they spoke English. Torn with a new since of confusion, his home is turned upside down. His sacred family language, now banished from the home, transforms his web into isolation from his parents. "There was a new silence in the home." Rodriguez is resentful that it is quiet at the dinner table, or that he can't communicate with his parents about his day as clearly as before. He is heartbroken when he overhears his mother and father speaking Spanish together but suddenly stop when they see Rodriguez. This was lets him know that he is now an outsider, no longer included in their private language. This is one of the saddest moments of his childhood.…
The Native American population is comprised of distinct and heterogenous ethnocultural groups that make up about 1.8 million of the total people in the United States. The American Southwest is particularly unique because of the environment, the Native traditions and culture, and the historical contact with the Spanish as well as the interactions with the United States government. An enclave describes an area surrounded by or within a territory in which the people in the area are culturally and/or ethnically different than the larger, surrounding territory. In Anzaldua's"how to tame a wild tongue",her target audience are: chicanos,chicanas and others who have had their language burdened by a dominant language. In her writing she uses ethos, pathos, and logos. Anzaldua tells us about her bringing up in an American school system. Her Ethos increases as she describes us what she’s been through and experiences. She tells us about her different struggles she’s put up with as her teachers deeply enforced her to forget her roots and adapt to an American way of thinking and speaking. Her knowledge and experiences of using different languages that are forms of Spanish, give us reason to listen to her. When she lists the different languages she uses and Spanish phrases she appeals, she appeals to anyone who has had difficulty with language struggles. "in my culture they are all words that are derogatory if applied to women-I've never heard them applied to men."(2947) Even through her own culture she is unable to express herself to the full extent.…
