The case setting is an Italian Social Enterprise, Cometa, founded in Como in the 1987 by a network of families committed to foster and educate children and young people in distress. Cometa has significantly grown through the years and it is now composed by seven different organizational units that offering a wide range of social, health and education services to both children and their families.

All these heterogeneous stakeholders with different needs – students and their families, teachers and collaborators, local enterprises, public and private donors, clients… – surely provide an added value for the organization, but also, generates more complexity in managerial and operational terms.
As shown, in its development the organization has presented a strong “demand side” approach, establishing its own strategy development to the answer to the punctual needs encountered in its activities and experiences. This has brought to a continuous but not structured growth of the organization that has never “had the time” to plan a formal long period strategy. ..
Furthermore, the organization has always recognized a great value to the research as fundamental driver to innovation. For this reason, Cometa has developed 14 Intership PhD, working and investigating over the principal organization needs for improving its model. Indeed, besides the educational themes, one of the major observed needs was connected to strategical and managerial competences in support to the development and growth of the organisation.
