Case Study: Ancol Corporation
Identify problems The problem before Sim joined this company * The relationship between management and employee was strained. The problems after Sim joined this company (After the removal of time clocks) * A selected group of employees ( approximately around 5 %), started showing up late, leaving early or taking extended lunch breaks. * Due to the above mentioned problem, discontent crept into the remaining 95% of employee. * The increased absenteeism levels caused a noticeable impact on plant productivity. * Due to the lack of inter personal skills of the supervisors, the relationship between supervisors and the employees deteriorated. * The additional burden set on the supervisors made it difficult to complete their main duties. * The lack of time keeping affected the financial department negatively to penalize employees for reduced work hours. * Due to the continuous stacking of reprimand letters, the number of grievances doubled over six months in the labor union. * Additional financial burden of hiring new employment. * Owing to supervisors being overworked with administrative workloads, efficiency and productivity decreased.

Analyze the root causes
In our opinion, the root of all problems is the lack of imagination on Sim’s part. Due to the gap in his solution; removal of all time clocks from the plant, led to a lot of trouble such as the increased absenteeism level, less productivity, payroll’s problem, etc, as mentioned in the previous answers (Identify Problems). Consequently, it is not the proper way out in this case.

In order to build trust in the workplace by establishing a new level of credibility and strengthen relations between management and employees, Paul Simard, the new plant manager, ordered the removal of all time clocks from the plant. Although initially employees saw the gesture as a sign of positive change, within two months problems started to appear. About 5% of the employees began showing up late, leaving early, or took extended lunch breaks. Those employees who respected the honour system began to find it unfair that abusers were paid for their absences. In addition, the increased absenteeism and increased administrative workloads were having a negative impact on plant productivity.…

A low morale affects the production rate and the quality of what is being produced. The trust gained from customers can be lost with quality and other issues which directly affects them. The management should improve its visibility amongst the workforce, should encourage the workers to pool in their ideas of improvement and create a stable atmosphere in order to stay afloat. Employees are the most precious assets of an organization as employees make or destroy an organization. The plant manager instead of wasting time by doubting the credibility of the plan he implemented, should have immediately switched to damage control mode and tried to revive the plant by making changes which were discussed…
