Organizational Change Plan-Part I The proposed organizational change is designed for the Miami VA Medical Center (MVAMC). The vision of the MVAMC is that of a hospital that provides veterans world-class benefits and services adhering to the highest standards, (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2010). Therefore, to provide and maintain excellence in care, it is necessary to improve constantly. Health laws require documentation of nursing interventions performed and evaluation of the care given to ensure and improve nursing care quality (Muller-Staub, 2009). In 2001, the MVAMC changed the paper-based nursing documentation system to computer based documentation. Electronic nursing documentation can facilitate the nursing process in all areas and aspects of nursing arena through the use of automated documentation; contributing to safe and high quality patient care. By doing so the organization reduced the staff workload, reduced the incident of medical errors and improved the efficiency of patient care management. The change was by far, one of the most challenging tasks this organization encountered. The change in the documentation system brought many benefits to the organization since its implementation nine years ago. Today, the organization is facing a new challenge. To support the vision of the institution, which is to provide outstanding care, it is necessary to upgrade the existing documentation system in specialized areas. The new software, specially designed for areas such as intensive care units, recovery room, and operating room (for anesthesia), will be implemented. Equipment such as cardiac monitors, ventilators, and pumps amid other devices are used daily in these settings. One of the benefits this new software provides is the ability to transfer data from the devices into the electronic record. In addition, the new software reduces the
