Oroonoko Vs Candide
I really enjoyed both readings, but I would have to lean towards Voltaire’s Candide more. I really enjoyed the story and the humor. It got me thinking about our world today. There are still many similarities today that I felt relatable to Candide’s journey (which was written in 1759.) Also I think the writing had much to do with me liking Candide more. Behn’s style of writing, at times, had me struggling to understand what was being said.

Even though I like Candide more I have to say my favorite character is Oroonoko. Behn portrayed him as a stoic man and a romantic. I respected Oroonoko because of that. Even though he was a conqueror of tribes when he was a prince, the other slaves still respected him, “… Surprize and Awe they had at the

One character from this novel that I strongly like is Stanislaus Katczinsky, or “Kat” as his friends call him. Kat is my favorite because he is always the one who takes charge. He is easily my favorite character because his maturity throughout the novel keeps him and his troop alove in many situations. I enjoy Kat’s role in the book because he is mentally and physically strong, and he does not focus on himself but others first. Something…

Biographical information about the author: Francois-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire, was born in 1694 in Paris, France. Though his father wanted him to become a lawyer, Voltaire long held a great passion for writing, and rather than going to law school, spent his time extensively composing poetry, essays, and historical studies. His widespread recognition as an author was established with the publication of the play “Oedipus”, a variation on the original Greek tragedy, in 1718. In 1726, after a fight with a French nobleman, Voltaire was exiled to England. There, he was exposed to a vast array of new philosophical ideas, specifically the concept of a constitutional monarchy and support for the freedoms of speech and religion, as well as the works of Shakespeare and Isaac Newton. He later returned to France, moving into a new home, Chateau de Cirey, with his wife, Emilie du Chatelet. The relationship between the two was highly intellectual, as they were both deeply intrigued by history, philosophy, and Newtonian physics. Greatly influenced by his earlier stay in England, Voltaire began to develop some of the ideas for which he is best known during this time, including his support for the separation of church and state and criticisms of both religious intolerance and certain religious practices. In 1736, Voltaire came in contact with Frederick the Great of Prussia, one of his admirers, and worked alongside him for several years in Prussia, until being exiled after a political dispute in 1752. Returning to France, Voltaire tied together his various experiences with philosophy, religion, and politics in writing his magnum opus, “Candide”, published in 1759. Having undergone a lengthy exile, Voltaire did not return to his city of origin, Paris, until 1778, shortly before his death. Voltaire’s diverse and highly…

One of my favorite characters was Josh, since he is one of the only characters that seems to act of his own free will, ignoring the attitudes and beliefs of those around him, and giving the appearance of being free from the restraints of the racial inequality that surround the African-Americans in the story. Josh would rather die than be subservient and treated like an animal. I at first found this admirable but was later sad to read that his hatred got the…

Voltaire's masterpiece, Candide, has a contrary writing style to Moliere in Tartuffe. Voltaire fancies listing things throughout Candide, along with creating unnecessary run on sentences, and too much punctuation including; dashes, commas, and semicolons. Where as, Tartuffe, is written in a play format with short and snippy sentences, creating incomplete fragments of sentences and dialogue.…

Candide is the story of a young man 's life adventures throughout the world, where he is subjected to evil and disaster. Pangloss, a mentor to Candide, teaches him that all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire did not believe that what happens in the world is always for the best. Voltaire shows us the inhumanities of man through social interaction and war. He over exaggerates the wrongs of medieval people. His thoughts are exaggerated but…

In Candide, Voltaire portrays him as an overly naive character who believes that he's in the best of all worlds regardless of the countless horrors that he and the people he love must witness and go through. It is done so in a way that the reader laughs because of how ridiculous it all seems for someone to remain optimistic throughout such turmoil, but it also points out our own character flaws. Throughout the novel Voltaire takes jabs at religion, philosophical views, classism, love, etc., so that the reader…

Voltaire uses literary techniques such as satire and critique to demonstrate the cruelty and folly of humanity. He focuses on serious topics that include sexism, and reduces it to absurdity so that it is comical to the audience. Despite the fact that Voltaire constantly over- exaggerates this subject, he does not trying to reinforce them. Some might say Voltaire portrays women as objects of desire and is capitalizing on the subject but to get his point across using satire, some people will have to get offended. In Candide, Voltaire is critiquing and satirizing sexism.…

This was quite a different read, much different than the last Trials of Socrates required reading. I truly enjoyed each and every story by Voltaire. I even enjoyed the introductory first page, describing Voltaire and his life as Francois-Marie Arouet. I enjoyed reading about how he had a lover or mistress named Mme du Chatelet and how they loved to study things together. Seriously, the French have some really interesting names. I wouldn’t even begin to try and pronounce either one of their names because I know I would just slaughter them. Even the Introduction was interesting and learning about how the stories came about. It gave a little background information about Voltaire to begin with. Although when reading the stories, all that background information faded away. I got so into the stories, I was truly taken away.…
