Ravensbrück- Known as the largest concentration camp for women, the first prisoners arrived at Ravensbrück on May 18, 1939. By 1945, the camp contained over 50,000 prisoners, mostly women. Until 1942, when gassing prisoners became a common practice, prisoners who were too weak or sick to work were shot. They were also subjected to medical experiments that included sterilization experiments, treating wounds with chemicals, and even amputating limbs to try new methods of setting and transplanting bones. A brothel consisting of these female prisoners was created to reward male prisoners, and some women joined voluntarily having been promised release, which never happened.
