The process of deriving the new drug starts in the laboratory. The chemical formula of the drug are composed in the lab and also called as the vitro testing. This type of testing performed before the drug can be tested on the animals or humans. The vitro testing gives the chemical description of the new drug and formulates the base and additional supplements. After vitro testing is done, the vivo testing starts on the animals. This process includes testing to figure out the possible side effects, level of toxicity, adverse effect and addiction. During this phase the pharmacodynamics of the drug is explored, which includes the calculation of the drug’s effect whether it desired or undesired and it always depends on the time and dose. During the testing on the animals also develops the frequency distribution curve, half-life, median effective dose (ED50), median toxicity dose and therapeutic index.…

    1) In the 1940s, some physicians prescribed low doses of a drug called dinitrophenol (DNP) to help patients lose weight. This unsafe method was abandoned after a few patients died. DNP uncouples the chemiosmotic machinery by making the lipid bilayer of the inner mitochondrial membrane leaky to H+. Explain how this can cause weight loss.…

Animals fight for survival daily, and sometimes their lives depend on their ability to adapt with their surrounding environments. Natural Selection is the process in which individuals have certain traits that allow them to survive and produce more efficiently (Reece et al.456). The animals that inherit these important traits have a higher fitness; therefore, those without the traits have a lower fitness (Reece et al.456). One example of natural selection is the differences between American Alligator and Albino alligator. The American Alligator acquired dark, thick skin due to the swampy, wet marshlands they live in ("American Alligator." Aquatic Community. AC Tropical Fish and Aquarium. Web. 21 Feb 2013.). It has a higher fitness than the Albino Alligator because their pigment not only hides them from predators, but also gives them an upper hand when sneaking up on prey while hunting ("American Alligator." Aquatic Community. AC Tropical Fish and Aquarium. Web. 21 Feb. 2013.). On the other hand, the Albino Alligator has a much lower fitness and is very rare because it does not have the allele that produces the pigment that has dark skin. The white color stands out like a sore thumb in its dark environment ("White alligator is one of the rarest in the world." Telegraph Media Group. 16 Feb 2009: n. page. Web. 21 Feb. 2013.).…

the first prisoners arrived at Ravensbrück on May 18, 1939. By 1945, the camp contained over 50,000 prisoners, mostly women. Until 1942, when gassing prisoners became a common practice, prisoners who were too weak or sick to work were shot. They were also subjected to medical experiments that included sterilization experiments, treating wounds with chemicals, and even amputating limbs to try new methods of setting and transplanting bones. A brothel consisting of these female prisoners was created to reward male prisoners, and some women joined voluntarily having been promised release, which never happened. The camp was liberated in April of…

One out of three American kids are obese. This rate has nearly tripled in the past thirty years. According to the Medical Dictionary, obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, twenty percent or more over an individual’s ideal body weight for their age and height. As we know obesity can lead to horrible things such as illness, disability, and death. To put a stop to obesity we need to start educating kids at a younger age, considering their rate is skyrocketing. Children need to be more aware of obesity, the facts and statistics, and how to avoid it and be healthy. Our job as a teacher is to promote physical activity in a classroom on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we cannot control what our students do for exercise at home or what they eat, but we can control what goes on in our classrooms, and that is the best place to start.…

In the beginning of unit one it becomes apparent that there are many difficulties involved in being a carer, the main difficulty that stood out for me is that many carers feel they have little or no choice in regards to who will care for the family member in question. Almost immediately we were made aware that Ann was expected to take on the role of caring for her step-father Augus when her mother passed away. Ann along with many other carers feel a sense of ‘Family duty’ when it comes to caring for a relative.…
