Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis upsetting more than 20 million Americans. It is an ailment because of disordered cartilage. Normal cartilage in the young healthy adult comprises of a matrix created of a combination of proteins and sugars (proteoglycans), water in addition to collagen. Within this matrix sit chondrocytes, cells that essentially manufacture the matrix they sit in. Imagine a bowl of gelatin with grapes sitting inside the gelatin and that is what cartilage appears like. Under normal condition, cartilage is adept of enduring both compressive forces along with shear forces.
