One of the severe outcomes of Hester Prynne's affair from The Scarlet Letter, was the endless shame that would follow her everywhere. Especially when living in a strict Puritan society it is extremely important to conform. Hester's sin marked her as "the common infamy" (page.66), and the isolation from the rest of society reminded her of her burden everyday. The idea of something "outlandish" (page. 78) only led people to a hard life of exile. Hester constantly faced hardships, having people point and whisper about her for seven years certainly had its effect. Walking out of that prison door, feeling the cold stares, she understood that she would remain in solitude. As Pearl grew, she noticed that people treated her differently. It was always just Pearl and Hester and even then they didn't have a strong connection. Somehow Pearl knew that she was different and she wasn't accepted.
Even after seven long years of torture Hester still held "the gaze of the multitude" (page.186). Despite her charity work and willingness to help the less fortunate; there was no amount of good deeds that she could have done to earn back their respect. As long as she stayed in that town she would always be considered a disgrace.
