Benefits of Recycling
According to research, each person throws away 1 million pounds of trash each year in US. Let’s try to imagine how many tonnes of rubbish were produced on Earth each year; I believe we are clear that the result is terrible. Plastics, polystyrenes, water bottles, papers and glass are very useful, but excessive usage surge the number of rubbish dump. This had caused unsightly in environment, it is a kind of damage to Mother Earth. To solve this problem, everyone must take a part in protecting our environment, I agree that government should set up law or include the knowledge in education to students and community so that they understand the fact and reduce the production of rubbish. One of the solutions is setting up more areas with recycle bin.
Firstly, recycling helps us to conserve natural resources that are either renewable or non-renewable, such as fossil fuels and metals, plants, minerals and water. For example, recycling paper helps to reduce cutting down of trees and usage of water. For your information, making a ton of paper from recycled stock saves up to 17 trees and uses 50 percent less water.
Recycling saves a huge amount of energy. For example, recycled aluminium scrap to make new aluminium cans, it is able to save up to 95% of energy than extracting from bauxite ores. Besides, this also save a lot of manpower, time, water, electricity, money and helps in decreasing the elimination of toxic substances from extracting metals from its raw ores.
Chemical substances that are toxic and carcinogenic are often released during disposing of trash. If the rubbish is burned, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur substance that presence in the smoke can cause air pollution and health problems such as lung and heart diseases, infection and immunity problems, it may also leads to chronic health problems. If the rubbish is buried, those poisonous liquid presences may diffuse into the water supply surrounding the area. This will cause environmental problems as it dirty the river and can kill microorganisms, animals and plants living in the river.
Furthermore, recycling greatly reduce the number of rubbish produced if it is done properly. We can buy recycled products whenever possible, because there are 4,500 recycled-content products out there for purchase, in categories as diverse as carpeting, motor oil, paper towels, egg cartons, trash bags and many more. This helps to reduce waste to landfill and it is important as landfill trash stay around for a long time, the wastes are not easily degraded. Reduction in landfill is an important step in conserving environment.
Throwing away recyclable material is obviously wastage, however, due to lack of awareness of community, we can see a lot of these reusable “rubbish” by the roadside, in the river and almost everywhere. Malaysia government should take action by giving talks, campaigns and placing more recycle bins to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle. Furthermore, we can reference and learn from the modern country such as Japan, Korea, US, Austria, Germany and Belgium.
