Act 1, Scene 1
I was startled by how by Iago’s manipulative nature revealed itself in the first few lines of the play. Shakespeare uses this somewhat backwards introduction to illustrate Iago’s character and the significant role he will play in the attempt to ruin Othello’s seemingly perfect life. It was shocking to discover Iago’s duplicitous intentions and livid attitude so early in the play, but it gave us perspective on the one-sided conflict between him and Othello. His ability to manipulate an authority figure so easily that he is not slightly detected as being duplicitous is very astounding to me. In addition, I understood Brabantio’s frantic reaction when confronting Othello about their relationship because he was trying to be a protective father. On the other hand, Brabantio could view his daughter as an object that he had lost control or possession of, but more information is needed in order to tell.
Act 1, Scene 3
I was very frustrated to witness how submissive and polite Othello is towards Iago. There is going to be a lot of dramatic irony in this play with readers knowledgeable of Iago's true intentions, and Othello completely naive to the slow unraveling of his life by Iago’s instruction. However, Iago’s destructive character does not only manipulate Othello, but everyone around him, including Roderigo, his trusted “friend,” who he convinces to join in on the revenge mission against Othello. His underlying intentions for both parties will probably result in unresolved conflicts and
