Otherness
LCT Task 2 Otherness basically means being different. Not different because you want to be, but different because somebody else makes you different. It’s when another group of people who may have some differences than you act as if they are better than you. They are making you an other. You are someone other or not like them and not up to their standards. According to the course of study, otherness results in prejudice, discrimination, inequality, oppression, and genocide. (Pearson, pg 12) Otherness results in a person being outcast or a group of people being outcast because of their differences. The course of study tells us that if you are different but accepted, then you are not an other. You have to be different and not accepted. Your difference can be anything from face, gender, class, societal differences, and a handicap, anything that makes you different and makes someone or a group of people ridicule you or make fun of you or ostracize you because of these differences. (“The Other”, 2009) The story “This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona” written by Sherman Alexie includes someone being an other. Otherness is represented in this work by a community of people of the same ethnicity not liking and ignoring someone else because of a behavior they have. By reading this story, I would assume that the author’s perspective on othering is that those you other may be the ones you need one day. The other in this work is Thomas Builds-The-Fire. Thomas is a man that lives on an Indian reservation with other Indians. Thomas is able to see into the future and talk to animals. This is what makes him an other. Thomas tells stories based on his visions and dreams. He tends to repeat the stories over and over. People hate to see him coming because they think he is crazy. Everybody in the community has made him an other and do not talk to him. “Nobody talks to Thomas anymore because he told the same damn stories over and over again” (Alexie, pg3). Victor is a

Being different can change your perspective but can also result in alienation and prejudice. This aspect of being different is raised in the book The Cay by Theodore Taylor. The book is about a white eleven year old boy named Phillip who is rescued by an elderly, black man named Timothy after their ship is torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine during World War 2. Phillip loses his eyesight after being hit on the head by a large plank of wood during the evacuation while Timothy reveals that he is illiterate, which causes them to be dependent on each other. They stumble upon an empty, deserted cay and must help each other to survive. Taylor uses a variety of techniques such as the setting, metaphors and exclusive language to convey the issue…

Have you ever experienced being the “other”? When you are the other it means being invisible. Being rejected by other people who are different from you may affect someone’s personality and outlook. You’re being discriminated by everyone so you feel like there’s no point of even doing what you like to do. In the reading “Diversity and it’s Discontents” Arturo Madrid writes that even though he was born and raised in this country, he has spent most of his life explaining who he’s not. I think in this world we are all individuals who have something that stands out to others. No one is alike; even the most identical of twins have something different to them. If the distinction cannot be seen on them, than that difference might be inside like a flipped organ. Maybe with the differences we all strive for greatness. Some have to work for it, others are born with it. Alternatively you can be me, who grew up great yet still wants more. My experience as an African American male has led me to pursue a degree in History and minor in African American Diaspora studies.…

Nonconformity is a force from one's personal self to step outside of the norm and bring a sense of individuality to a world in which there is very little originality anymore. As a society, we are ruled by the media. They force their points of views down everyones throats without one’s consciousness even acknowledging so. We walk past billboards, view commercials, peek around all of our social media websites, and all the while our minds are being bred to be biased towards a certain fashion, a certain point of view, as far as even a music choice which is most preferable. To step outside of this commonality in today’s society to the eye doesn’t seem too difficult. In everyone’s minds they are “unique”, “original”, and “creative”. What we don’t notice is how this seems to be what everybody believes, yet the fashion, attitude, whatever is as a phase and a trend. To truly step outside is a great leap and it’s not simply acknowledging just how original you are, it’s to live your life everyday in not simply the same consistency but in such a way that you aren’t driven to stand out or fit in. It’s a numbness to either side of the spectrum. Being able to cope and not be judged based upon an individual’s nonconformity today is not as hard as it was in the past, however it is still picked upon. It’s only natural to separate the one that does not belong, as seen in many animal species when an animal is bred with a genetic deformity causing it to not belong, thus being shunned by the rest of the basic of the species. Today, even, one of the main controversies is homosexuality. Despite all the recent movements and reformities of the law, gay male and females are still ridiculed. Sometimes to the point of suicide or even such bizarre, violent bullying leading to near fatal wounds and mental scars. So in a sense, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s famous aphorism is correct. “For non-conformity the world whips you with displeasure.”…

The world has dramatically revolutionized over the past centuries. Nowadays, people have different beliefs and traditions. As a result, the world is now full of human diversity in contrast to how it was before. Back in the 18th century, countries and continents were fully segregated. It was unusual to see a person with different nationality or cultural traits in a different country in comparison to the 21st century. Thus, in today’s society we have people of different races, countries, and religions. It’s a social change that has occurred worldwide due the increase of human migration into different countries. This social change, however, has caused a negative impact on the community itself; hence, being different has become a target for criticism. Seeing such diversity in our society makes it easy for one to judge others based on their religion, their nationality, and the color of their skin; however, people should not be judged by their physical appearance, their personal…
