“That’s the same building which was blown up in Independence day!”, just a whole lot bigger, dumber and stupider than the “boringly straight-faced” Olyumpus Has Fallen. Roland Emmerich has wrecked the world more than any other director, with aliens in Godzilla and continent-killing in 2012, it’s not surprising that he death-raid’s the White House again in this latest film “White House Down”. However, don’t get too excited about the “hottest flick on the block” (critic) because I was extremely disappointed with this newest ‘apocalyptic’ film. Maybe it’s time to give up deconstructing the world Roland Emmerich, because you surely didn’t do a good job in this elongated, cliché-riddled and unrealistic film.…
Yukichi Fukuzawa was definitely one of the greatest Japanese theorists and thinkers during the Meiji era. He played a leading role in the development of Japan’s education system based on the ideas of Western civilization. The Autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa is a book dictated by Fukuzawa offers a vivid portrait of the intellectual’s life story and a rare look inside the formation of a new japan. The belief that race is merely based on the color of a person’s skin has been the most common used method for defining racial boundaries in the modern world. However, this is not an accurate representation of how human beings should be classifies. According to authors, Omi and Winant, identifying an individual’s race on the basis of physical attributes is the most superficial factor in determining a person’s race (2). These authors, unlike many other scholars in the world do not define race based on an individual’s physical attributes. They define race as being a social concept due to the fact that they recognize that the classification of race varies broadly across the world. As stated by the authors, “In our view it is crucial to break with…
In the book, El Otro Lado by Julia Alvarez, describes the author’s experience of leaving the dominican republic and moving to the united states. This is more than just her moving though, it’s about her transition through things like her culture, her behavior, her personality and her childhood into a world of emotions filled with insecurity, love, hurt. Alvarez’s use of Spanish that is mixed into the English she writes her poems also describe stories of her life along with the struggle of emigrating to a new country and what it’s like living in a country that isn’t 1st world or most advanced, revealing feelings from situations that most immigrants face coming to the United States. Alvarez also reveals her own personal…
The second major belief is that most humans will be sent to Hell after they die. Only those few who have been "saved" will go to heaven. Salvation requires repentance of sins and trusting Jesus as one's Lord and Savior. People who have been saved and make it to heaven will not all be treated equally. Believers who have done many good deeds will be rewarded more in heaven; believers who have led an evil life will be rewarded less.…
The society we now live in has become so immune to free thinking due to the explosion of technology and the mass media. We tend to just believe what we are told by those who run the media societies, or by those who are integrated in our own comfort zone. In The Allegory of the Cave, Plato says our “bonds prevent us from turning our heads around”. This quote can be taken many different ways, but I chose to read into this statement by emphasizing how people are so comfortable being the way it is that they are unwilling to step out and explore life and the world around them. People in today’s society have become lazy thinkers and would rather be told how to behave and what to believe rather than making these decisions on their own.…
The book Maus addresses the issue of the Holocaust and tells the story of Vladek in detail, a man who survived Auschwitz. However, one of the most striking things about the story is not the surviving issue, but how it reveals the relationship between Vladek and his son. Competition is everywhere in the story. In the first book Vladek had a competitive relationship with his son Artie, but throughout the story the competition falls into the hands of Artie and Richieu, the dead brother.…
In Zoroastrianism the afterlife is determined by the balance of good and evil, thoughts, deeds, and words throughout ones life. If the good outweighs the evil, heaven awaits. If the evil outweighs the good, you go to hell. Although there is also a middle for those whose good and evil were equal. In Islam, Muslims believe mankind will be judged on their good and bad deeds and consigned to Jannah (paradise) or Jahannam (hell), similarly to Zoroastrianism. In Christianity…
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” (Martin Luther King Jr.). Although there is some people nowadays who maintain prejudicial treatment of racism actually hating people of their color is unacceptable in the society of digital epoch. Evolution of society first of all means evolution of its soul and mind and obvious it’s impossible when the thoughts of society got stuck in the past century.…
Many ancient arts or stories can influence modern storytelling. Although there will be differences in each interpretation of that story, it will keep the main point. Some depictions of a story might be more visually appealing than others. The Odyssey and “O brother Where Art Thou” had many similarities and differences.…
There have always been events in American history that increased tensions between free states and slave states. In the following essay I will go over three events that has caused problems between one other. The Compromise of 1850, Uncle Toms Cabin, and John Brown’s Raid at Harper’s Ferry I have chosen these events because these are the events that stand out to me when tensions between free states and slave states come to mind.…
Heaven exists for the souls that believe that Jesus Christ is their Savior and Hell exists for the souls that have rejected Jesus Christ as their Savior. Anyone can receive the free gift of eternal life that was bought by the death of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). To receive the gift one has to believe and know that God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to this earth to save humanity from their sins through His perfect life, death and resurrection (John 3:16). When one understands what has been done, their life will be forever changed and will be evident through the act of sanctification. Sanctification is the product of a changed heart that their soul will spend eternity with their heavenly. Ultimately, the souls of humanity will end up either in Heaven with God or in Hell separated from God for…
The Christian worldview includes monotheism which is the belief in one God. Not only do Christians believe in a personal, knowable Creator but he believes in the Trinity. The Trinity is God being in three parts: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. To most people, this is very confusing because they don’t understand how God can be three in one. In this case, Christians go to heaven not because of their works but because of God’s grace. God displayed His grace when He died on the cross for us. Christians get most of their information from the Bible. This is the foundation for a Christian’s philosophy.…
Reincarnation, salvation, prayer, 8 fold path, five pillars, and the five key relationships are all a part of both the Eastern and Western religions. The Eastern and Western religions both have some things in common as well as some things they can vary. First and Foremost, the two religions of Christianity (West) and Buddhism (East) both may have the same rules they must follow, but they also both have different goals in life. Both Buddhism and Christianity want to treat other the way they want to be treated, but according to class discussion ¨Jesus is the way to salvation (Christianity). Following the middle path is the way to enlightenment (Buddhism).¨ While the Christians think that following Jesus is only to achieve salvation and that…
In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the changes that occur in societies across the world. The novel immediately projects the fear and misunderstanding felt by the people of Bambara due to the unexpected early changes that are taking place in Africa. “A white man...There’s a white man on the bank of the Joliba” is exclaimed by Dousika’s pregnant wife Sira (Conde 5). The family is instantly struck with a curious mind but also one that is uneasy. The sight of this white man causes great despair already for the man of the house Dousika: “White men come and live in Segu among the Bambara? It seemed impossible, whether they were friends or enemies!”(Conde 10). The unexpected appearance of this white man marks the beginning of anguish for Dousika and his four sons, especially for Dousika at first for he is embarrassed by the council due to this stranger’s intrusion. This white…
