Since he was drafted and knew nothing about fighting, Otto was sent to training in Mainz. Otto was recruited for the artillery team and sent over to the Western Front. He was in 2 battles while he served. One battle was called the Battle of the Somme which took place in 1916. Almost every soldier had a purpose in the wars. Otto happened to be a rangefinder for the infantry. In between the first and second battle, Otto was ranked to Lieutenant. The second battle was called the Battle of Cambrai which happened in 1917. For quite sometime, the Franks had a certain time period they could talk and move around. They could not be loud nor be seen or else the Nazi’s would find them. Along with having to be quiet, the annex was only a two family living space. The Franks were living in there along with the van Pels and a single man that was a dentist. That is a total of 8 people in a two family living space. The annex was definitely tough to live in and very frightening time to live through. After 2 years of hiding and living in the annex, they were found. Since they were hiding, they were arrested and sent to a concentration camp named Auschwitz.
