ABSTRACT THE FIRST OTTOMAN CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATON IN THE SERVICE OF THE OTTOMAN STATE: THE CASE OF THE OTTOMAN RED CRESCENT (OSMANLI HİLAL-İ AHMER CEMİYETİ)
Hüsnü Ada M..A., Department of History Supervisor: Assist. Prof Selçuk Akşin Somel September 2004 This study focused mainly on the organization and structure of the Ottoman Red Crescent (Osmanlı Hilal-i Ahmer Cemiyeti) under an analytical perspective. This included the history, regulation, central and provincial administration, types of activities, the Ottoman Red Crescent Delegation of Women, financial data and the personalities of the leading figures of the Ottoman Red Crescent. By this, I aimed to discuss the nature of the Ottoman Red Crescent, which might help the readers to go beyond the conception that the Ottoman Red Crescent was an extension of the state. 22. Which group represented such extreme conservatism within the Ottoman Empire that reform was frustrated? The intense conservatism of powerful groups such as the Janissaries, and to a lesser extent the religious scholars, reinforced this fatal attitude. Through much of the 17th and 18th centuries, these groups blocked most of the Western-inspired innovations that reform-minded sultans and their advisors tried to…

The inscription of Suleyman reveals that the Ottoman Empire was a Muslim community. However, not only did this inscription inform readers that religion was existent within this empire during this period of time, but it also reveals a clear distinction of social status amongst this community. It is evident that Suleyman was a rather significant figure within society due to the fact that he is described within the inscription as the 'head of Muhammad's community.' (Stearns, Peter N., Stephen S. Gosch, and Erwin P. Grieshaber., 2003, pp.60) The source provides an outlook on the society at this period in time.…

The empire began to disintegrate as the Ottomans lost battle after battle, and the Serbs, Romanians, and Greeks gained their independence. The Arabs in the Middle East and Armenians were all that remained in the Ottoman Empire under the rule of Sultan Abdul Hamid. Since the empire was in decline, young Armenian people gradually began to demand political reforms, a constitutional government, and an end to discriminatory taxes directed at Armenians because of their Christian beliefs. The Sultan ignored their pleas and the young Armenians were persecuted. Years later, an organization called the Young Turks eventually altered the future of the Armenian people because of their vicious acts against them in the form of a genocide.…

The American Red Cross owns and continues to build a very long and rich history. Upon its founding in 1881 by Clara Barton who was undoubtedly a visionary leader, the organization quickly became and has remained arguably in my opinion one of, if not America’s most successful emergency responders. Over the years the organization has not only sought to relieve but also to prevent suffering by taking a proactive approach in dealing with a perceived and impending crisis.…

I arrived at Istanbul on May 25th, 1540 and entering the bay toward the city was breathtaking. From the top of Istanbul, stood a tremendous cathedral looking building with a domed roof and 4 smaller but grand towers. I could not wait to get off the boat to explore the city. Once ashore, I was stopped by someone in lavish clothing with a chest and book with him. He asked me, “Are you Muslim or not?” I told him no and he then opened the chest and asked for some gold. I was confused at first but he then explained, “If you wish to be protected in the city, you must pay the jizya or tax.” (McKay, World Societies, pg. 606). I presented the gold and once he was about to leave, he said, “Welcome to Istanbul.” Besides my encounter with the tax collector, I roamed the city and made my way toward the market. The market was so crowded I could barely move in the market because it was tightly packed. There were a lot of merchants there selling elegant cloth such as silk, and cotton. They were selling gems, gold and silver jewelry and even more impressive pieces of art (McKay, World Societies, pg. 610). No wonder the place is so packed, everyone wants to buy the beautiful craftsmanship of the Ottomans. It appears most of the Ottomans make their living by being part of a trade or by being a merchant. After leaving the market I wanted to check out the giant building I saw when entering the city. I made my way…

The Ottomans began to face many problems dealing with foreign affairs, economic crises and nationalism revolts in all provinces. Fisher tells us that this essentially initiated the beginning of many struggles and issues the Ottomans and their constitution would endure over the course of the century (294). The younger citizens, especially those in European and Arab countries, lost sentiment for Ottoman patriotism, and began to push for nationalism. Many reforms would be made to try and improve equality within the state. This time period would become recognized as the Tanzimat era. Tanzimat derives from the Arabic word for reorganization or reform. Tanzimat was a reform system set up by the grand vizir, Mustafa Reshid, who tried to develop a constitution that would push for more Western and modern civilization. One main reform that came from the Tanzimat was under The Judicial Council, creating laws that arose from western civilization and disposed of laws that arose from Islam. The Tanzimat ideology was embodied in young Ottomans who were educated in the Western world or in institutes similar to those in the Western world. These young Ottomans grew interests in subjects as philosophy, politics, and biography and were open to new ideas and modernization, and pushed away conservative Muslim Ottoman ideology…
