Our Only May Amelia Book Report
The novel Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm is a nonfiction book that will break the hearts of readers. May Amelia is the only girl who lives near the Nasel River she is expected to be lady-like and isn’t supposed to do anything that could be dangerous but despite this she is very rebellious and does what she wants lady-like or not. Throughout the story she get into trouble and every time Papa (May Amelia’s father) yells at her. The theme in the story is to cherish the ones that you love before it’s too late. Jennifer L. Holm shows this when Papa isn’t mad when May Amelia is in the water when the damn opened. Instead Papa just was happy that May Amelia was okay, he cherished her more since he understood that he could lose her like he
lost Amy.
I liked this book because of the adventures May Amelia and Wilbert took together to Baby Island. One of the literary qualities in this book is the setting. The author does a good job at explaining where the story is and what time period the story is in. Another literary quality is mood, the author uses mood to help make the story exciting. I would highly recommend this book to students who want to learn about early migration of people from Finland moving to the western part of the United States.
