The Longman Reader
Select one of the topics below and respond in an essay of between 650 and 1000 words.
Develop your own thesis and supporting ideas/details. Include clear, concrete examples so that you can “show” rather than “tell.” Write a 1-3 sentence summary of either the TedTalks Video or
The Longman Reader essay in your essay so that your readers understand your references. Also include a quotation from the essay. Acknowledge any source you use in your essay both in the essay and in a works cited page. Your intended audience includes other CNM students, ENG 950 instructors including me, and college-educated readers in general.
1. In his essay “A Moral Solution to the Organ Shortage” (551) Alexander Tabarrok argues that the way to relieve the acute shortage of donor organs is by paying donors. After reading
Tabarrok’s essay and brainstorming the idea, write an essay in which you argue for or against the idea that organ donors should be paid for their services. Consider the idea of treating organs like a commodity and creating a marketplace for human organs. Use various modes of development, including argument and cause and effect. Be sure you address both the positive and the negative aspects in your argument. Use a summary of and quotation from the reading. Other research can be done to supplement your final draft, but be sure to include additional research in a works cited page. 2. In Virginia Postrel’s essay “Need Transplant Donors? Pay Them” (555) Postrel argues that the transplant system is broken in this country, though there are solutions. After reading Pastrel’s essay and brainstorming the idea, write an essay in which you argue for or against soliciting the donation of organs from healthy donors. Consider each side of the issue and use various methods of development, including cause and effect (e.g. why our culture discourages donations to what discouraging donations might lead to).
