In the case of this book, I wrote this story out of the dissatisfaction I found myself feeling with the way success is defined. In my decision to write this book, I have come to realize that we are far too focused on the individual themselves that gets furthest ahead in our time. With outliers, my wish is to make people understand that success is constructed by the contributions of different people, factors, and circumstances. Outliers do not rise from nothing, they are the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot. We as a society have more control over who succeeds and how many of us succeed than we give ourselves credit for. To me, this amazing and inspiring idea is what I want people to take away from this
