The Virginia Tech Study Skill Self- Help Information website has an SQ3R; a five step system which is to survey, ask questions, read carefully, recall and lastly review. These steps are memory lessons to train the brain in learning properly. This website also focuses on Note Taking, the Cornell System. This system gives direction on proper and efficient not taking while in class and/ or reading. The specifications for the Cornell System is a preparation of what the note should look like; measurements are given and a recall column. The Cornell System outlines specifics on how to take notes during a lecture. After recording notes, it is necessary to read what was written; recite and recall what was learnt, this is a good studying and memory lesson. Writing Papers are vital because it shows the professor what an individual learned in the course. Virginia Tech’s Self-Help gives and outline of how a paper is to be written. There is an introduction; gives the reader a brief synopsis of what the paper is about. After the introduction there are three body paragraphs; there should be transitions between paragraphs, topic(s) finally a conclusion of each paragraph. After the introduction and the three paragraphs there is the conclusion; which the thesis should be restated and sums up the paper. After reading Virginia Tech’s Self- Help system website there is the Columbia University Study Skills webpage.
The Columbia University Study Skills webpage has information about Focusing and Reading. This page focuses on what is being read and techniques that are helpful to students. There are various of questions to ask while reading; tells students to break in-between reads to ask questions that may be viable in learning the material. Not only must a student as questions while reading but also one must be organized while reading. Use the 3R’s (read, recite and ‘rite) for imperative information, and to review what was read. Do not read right through because it is not allowing your brain to obtain information correctly; take a short break and review. Finally Columbia University Study Skills page indicates at the end of each paragraph, chapter or page to recall and recite (with the book closed); this is a lesson for the brain to remember what was read.

Anne Ketch discusses the value of conversation as a strategy for reading and writing comprehension and metacognition across subjects. Specifically, she details seven cognitive strategies which form the basis of what are essentially good reading and learning habits. These include: making connections, questioning as you read, using mental imagery as a connection to layers of a text through the evocation of senses and emotions, determining what is or is not important to the understanding of a text, inferring, retelling and synthesizing information and using fix up strategies to assist readers when meaning falls apart. These strategies should be explicitly modeled and taught by the teacher, practiced and used continuously…

My present writing style is to read the instructions of the assignment to get the general sense of what is expected. Sometimes I begin by skimming the information and then rereading the material a few more times to make sure I have all of the required details. Some of the things I find beneficial to writing is taking notes while I research and coping down the URL in case I decide to use it within the paper. Many times these notes are typed out on my computer in complete sentences. In addition, the computer is the only source I utilize to write as typing keeps up with the thoughts which seem to come at the speed of light. This tends to happen when I am very passionate about the topic. Another time saver is working to develop a strong theme…

Lecture notes play an important role in preparing for examinations, as it may ensure the success of students. Many students do not have adequate note-taking skills, and this contribute a lot to the creation of incomplete and unrelated notes (Kiewra, 2002). Researchers suggest that the act of note-taking can engage students in learning tasks and deepen their understanding and ability to apply new material (Katayama & Crooks, 2003). Note-taking offers three important premises for university students. First, the act of note-taking may have an influence on the encoding function of the brain, which engages the learner’s attention and subsequently moves the information into long-term memory. Secondly, note-taking will make the students less dependent on their instructor’s notes, as they contain personally meaningful information that might help in the recall process. Thirdly, it may help students with learning difficulties.…

The common approach of lower level language learners is to focus on reading every word and understanding every word of a text. The reader analyses every single word, but instead he gets a general idea from the text, because he is not focused in reading for specific detail. Instead of reading each word, the reader takes words in chunks, that is to say, sets of words that give meaning to the text, such as phrases, clauses or even whole sentences. It is also important to state that like adults, most of our reading is silent. When we read silently, we save the time spent on articulating words, and read in groups of words instead of one word at a time. However, a lot of people like students, are prone to reading for detail, which in the academic context for example, can be counterproductive if they are due to read just for an overall idea. The same happens with students who are learning a foreign or second language, and the most effective way to deal with this is by providing appropriate class activities intended to help the students’ speed reading skills. By doing so, they will be more focused on skimming to get the general idea from a text, rather than reading for detail.…
