Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth is about a little girl, Ofelia, who moves with her mother to live with her new stepfather, Captain Vidal. Ofelia comes to learn that she is princess of the Underworld and, with the help from faeries, must complete magical tasks in order to escape Earth and her cruel stepfather and return to her throne in the mystical world (Pan’s Labyrinth). Del Toro’s main purpose of this film is to parallel the monsters and tasks Ofelia must overcome to fascist 1940s Spain (Kermode). However, with deeper analysis, the monsters may also represent universal societal issues such as mistreatment of the poor by the wealthy, the premature death of childhood innocence and wonder, and abuse. Del Toro’s monsters in Pan’s…

The setting of the story changes as the book goes on but for the most part the story takes place in Boston. The story first takes place in the Lapham household in the early 1770’s. The setting soon becomes the Lyte’s mansion, the courthouse, and various shops in Boston for a while. Finally the setting stays in one place for most of the book when Johnny moves into the Boston Observer shop. Some of the major themes are war transforms boys into men, war, pride, and forgiveness. Since the setting is Boston, where the British soldier…

    Pan's Labyrinth Analysis

The dark fantasy film Pan’s Labyrinth is a fascinating example of creative story-telling. This film focuses on so many aspects between Ofelia’s imaginary world and the real world, including her stepfather fighting for the Francoist regime. This little girl is uprooted to a military outpost in Fascist-ruled Spain commanded by her new stepfather, the Captain. The reoccurring contrast between Ofelia’s world and her stepfathers world stood out to me, through elements of brutality, innocence, war, imagination, disobedience, and choice. The tests Ofelia must face are chilling and nightmarish, they mirror not just the cruelty of the battles between the army and the rebels, but equally the deep loss and insecurity which Ofelia faces. Del Toro brilliantly intertwines between the two stories, so that we easily follow the action in two worlds simultaneously.…

“Just follow me and run like your life depends on it. Because it does” (Dashner, 361). In the books The Maze Runner and Tears of a Tiger, they both share the same theme of death. In The Maze Runner, Thomas and his friends constantly live in anxiety that they will all be killed by hideous monsters and never make it out of the maze. During Tears of a Tiger, Andy had witnessed death right in front of him and had scarred him to a very threatening point in his life. Both The Maze Runner and Tears of a Tiger share a common theme of death because both Thomas and Andy are shocked by death, someone committed suicide, and they both witness a death or two.…

It starts to take place in the future, located in Florida, United States. The only difference I picked up between the movie and novel, however is the moment where Ender was present near Graffs cabin building a raft, whereas the movie abruptly went past this scene. Ender has always been misunderstood in his life, such as this quote that proves this, ¨That’s where you’re mistaken. He’s even sweeter than he looks (28). Even though this scene appears minor, it was the only place where Ender felt human, and could do what he wanted. I think that this was included to show that they didn’t completely rip out Ender’s childhood out from…

Characters are an important element of a novel. They make a story come alive. Heroes tend to be daring, in order to “save the day”. In James Dashner’s novel, The Maze Runner, Thomas, the protagonist, is curious, determined and courageous, all heroic character traits. His inquisitiveness, grit and bravery throughout the novel prove to the reader that he is truly a hero.…

Amir’s quest to redeem himself makes up the heart of the novel. Early on, Amir strives to redeem himself in Baba’s eyes, primarily because his mother died giving birth to him, and he feels responsible. To redeem himself to Baba, Amir thinks he must win the kite-tournament and bring Baba the losing kite, both of which are inciting incidents that set the rest of the novel in motion. The more substantial part of Amir’s search for redemption, however, stems from his guilt regarding Hassan. That guilt drives the climactic events of the story, including Amir’s journey to Kabul to find Sohrab and his confrontation with Assef. The moral standard Amir must meet to earn his redemption is set early in the book, when Baba says that a boy who doesn’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything. As a boy, Amir fails to stand up for himself. As an adult, he can only redeem himself by proving he has the courage to stand up for what is right.…

Imagine a dangerous journey, a mission that your family doesn't want you to go on. One surrounded by bad predictions and an overall sense of doom. That's all I could picture when I first read the starting sentence. I can just imagine that this book will be full of adventure and possibly misfortune on a journey that the main character will be on. I expect a lot of twists, turns, and obstacles that every good book should have.…

In 2005 when finishing his last book in “The Jimmy Fincher Saga” Dasher was told to start working on another book. So in November 2005 before going to bed an idea came to Dasher mind, of boy stuck in any unsolved maze, and to thus The Maze Runner was born. Dasher says his inspiration came from these 5 thing “Lord of the Flies” Dasher says he read this book in high school and absolutely loved it, it is defiantly one of the biggest inspirations for the book, kid being isolated in the glades fighting themselves and each other, trying to figure out a way out. Next “Enders Game” also reading this book in high school too was a definitely the inspiration for the character Tomas and having the kids growing up so fast. Other influence were the show “Lost” because not only is it one of Dashner favorite shows but also because he loves the story telling of the show and it heavily influenced his writing style. And the last two influences the book: the Maze Runner” was the book “The Shinning” and of course the idea of a corn maze.…

In both movies, the protagonists are in a dystopian future where power has fallen into the hands of others, much like a dictatorship. They are all unhappy with their lives and search for change for themselves and the people around them. In The Maze Runner, Thomas, the main character, is trying to escape a maze that is created by people who are controlling the maze to stop them from escaping. They have little to no power inside the maze and no access to the outside world. In The Hunger Games, Katniss has no privileges as a “citizen” in the districts and is put inside an arena to kill people as a show for the Capital, who is basically a dictatorship. The theme of dystopia is fairly similar in the fact that both characters begin in a very tragic…
