I) JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
1.treat people in recovery a.help talk about, understand, and cope with their problems 2. work to prevent drug and alcohol abuse 3.educate parents to get involved in children’s exposure to drug and alcohol 4. counsel family and friends of addicts a. asks questions and concerns they may have b. finds out how they think addiction is impacting their life c. works with them to be supportive and helpful 5.helps people who may be afraid they will become addicts 6.help addict find a job, housing, etc. 7.work with treatment team to come up with best recovery plan a. clinical assessment -type, amount, length of use -cultural issues -effects of use on individuals life -current medical problems and medication *mental health and behavioral problems -legal, financial, employment, stability situation *previous incarceration, etc. -education background -current living situation and environment -previous treatment/attemps of recovery b. course of treatment -determine if medical supervision in detoxification unit required -hospital unit -supervised outpatient center - monitors progress, situation,, overall well being -outside facility *keep contact with patient *speak regularly with case manager *one-on-one counseling *answer questions/concerns patient has *monitor progress *speak with other care providers

1.minimum high school diploma
2.can begin in social service setting with bachelor’s a.2 years (on job training) b.some colleges training programs (2 years) - on effects of drugs alcohol -on crisis intervention *emergency situations mental/emotional and medical 3.can also get certified by NBCC (national board of certified counselors)
