Topic: Psychological Profiling
General Purpose: To unveil the truth about criminal profiling
Specific Purpose: To persuade audience that criminal profiling is too new of a field to be credited or discredited, it has the potential to be a great tool in police investigation, but its validity must first be proven.
Introduction: Attention Grabber: How many of you have eve heard of The Green River Killer?
12 Page profile was created, by John Douglas- most known profiler- former FBI profiler
Profile created over 20 years before the apprehension of Ridgeway, over all was not a match to Gary Ridgeway.
Profile was useful in weeding out suspects, getting investigators closer to true killer.
Thesis: Psychological Profiling has great potential, but with it being such a new field it is too early to determine its usefulness in criminal investigations.
Transition: Now that you have an idea of what Criminal Profiling is, I would like to discuss why it is such a controversal topic, and what we can do about it.

Glamorization in the media- journalist writing about profilers “ mystical powers of deductions” - According to Brent Snook, one of the authors of the article, “The Criminal Profiling Illusion” What’s Behind the Smoke and Mirrors”, “People are particularily attracted to phenomena that appeal to fantasy by focusing on the powers ordinary people lack but desire.” Drama- Criminal Minds, Mentalist- portray cases where profiles are created, and offenders apprehended in a matter of days. - unrealistic, like the case of the Green River Killer, it took over 20 years to apprehend Ridgeway and the profile wasn’t even a match.
