THE CANTERBURY TALES – The Friar’s Tale
Geoffrey Chaucer
1. Setting: In the medieval period in a town with summoner and friar; on the road out of town with summoner. the devil and the man with his cart and at old woman’s house with old woman, summoner and devil.
2. The story-retelling the story-summary
An archdeacon, an officer of the church who presided over ecclesiastical courts, uses spies to get information about people who live in the parish. With the derogatory information in hand, the archdeacon summons sinners and wrongdoers exorbitant tribute to tighten them so that their names do not appear among those who practice evil.
There is a summoner who makes his rounds blackmailing people to serve the archdeacon. One day, this summoner meets a nice man and found that both are bailiffs. Each of them reveals that they use unfair means to extort money from their victims and agree to enter into a partnership. After exchanging information, the summoner asked about the man's name. The man reveals that he is “a devil, and his abode is hell.” The convener is an agreement to join forces with this man, and even though the demon is really a devil, he (the summoner) will honor their word. The two seal the deal and start your journey.
The convener and the demon come near a farmer whose car is stuck in the mud. In desperation, the farmer shouts at the devil take everything - car, horse, everything. The convener inherent demon to take that offer, but the demon explains that because of the curse was not pronounced with the heart and with sincerity, he has no power to do so. Later, they go to the house of an old woman who refuses to pay bribes to the Summoner. Again the convener requires money; again the
