Ultimately, the solution to lack of soccer in my life was to re-introduce myself into the sport as a coach. If I could no longer enjoy playing the sport that I loved, than the best thing to do is to try to coach younger kids who may not be as fortunate as I have been to love and appreciate the game of soccer. So every Saturday at 10:15 he would arrive and ask me to work on his big kicks. Every week we worked, trying to achieve the perfect kick: one that flew high and far into the net. Finally, after several weeks of hard work and frustration, he kicked the ball high and far and it soared into the four foot tall portable soccer goal. The smile on Jake’s face had never been wider, and much to my surprise, he ran over and gave me a hug; The boy, against all odds, had truly become passionate about the beautiful game of soccer.
What surprised me the most about coaching in the TOPS program was that I actually found it more enjoyable than playing. While I was playing, I could only experience my own passion and joy for the sport. While coaching, I could share the passion for the game with my players. Coaching Jake elevated my love of the sport exponentially, because the more we worked together and overcame the difficult boundaries of his disorder, the more our passion for the game
