Overcoming Adversity Challenges
Because of the challenges in my life--my parents divorce, my fathers cease of contact, and my development of dystonia--I have learned to take the high road in the face of adversity. Maybe it's because I look at everything as a lesson, or because I don't want to walk around angry, or maybe it's because I finally understand. There are things I don't want to happen but have to accept, things I don't want to know but have to learn, and people I don't want to live without but have to let go. I am thankful for every adversity I have had in my life. They were difficult to get through but because I have faced them I am a more kind and compassionate individual who has a more complete understanding of the human condition.

Adversity has played a part in my life as well. It has taught me I can overcome hurdles and it has made me the woman I am today. As a child, I suffered from debilitating migraine headaches. After every failed doctor appointment and multiple hospital visits being medicated with morphine, I grew tired and frustrated. These migraines would occur about once a month, armed with enough pain to keep me in bed for up to 2 days, they were a huge interference…

When these moments in life hit, people see them as barriers, unable to be broken down. However, there is a point when an individual demonstrates their true qualities or characteristics, which would not have come to light unless an adversity had risen. Adversities can allow individuals to view the world in a new perspective due in part to their hard work, though this is not always the case as the pressure may become to intense for some individuals to conquer.…

Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” Dictionary.com defines adversity as “adversity n. adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.” Adversity is something that everyone will experience at some point in his life; however, some people face greater adversities than others. Morrie Schwartz and Elie Wiesel are two men that faced two of the greatest adversities that this world knows. Elie is a survivor of Adolf Hitler’s destruction of the Holocaust, and Morrie Schwartz was a simple man who lost a battle to Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS. When I was in first grade, my father was deployed to Iraq. My whole world changed. We moved to Utah to live with my grandparents while my mother was pregnant. It took forever for my dad to return from war. I missed him so much, especially during the holidays. When my dad came back to the States, I thought that things would be better and that our family would be whole again. Two years later, my parents got divorced. My dad was suffering from PTSD and fell into addiction. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression while my mother was trying her best to raise us on her own and earn her master's degree. I felt that my whole life was falling apart in front of me. These struggles have made me who I am. I have learned to be more compassionate towards…

Throughout every person’s life, there always stands an obstacle to overcome. While some choose to retreat from the challenge, others choose to surmount whatever it is holding them back. I have always believed that if someone wants something bad enough, they will work however hard they have to in order to achieve their goal. I can honestly admit that through years of determination, research, and self-motivation I have been able to prevail over my adversity: stuttering. Many people try to mask this speech impediment with flowery terminology such as “blocking”, “bumpy speech”, or “mild disfluency.” To a stutterer, no matter how specialists or professionals refer to this disability, it is far from trouble-free. Each and every day I deal with stuttering with the conviction and determination to speak well.…

We see these inspirational adversities every day on the news or in the newspaper; handicapped people participating in the Olympics, cancer survivors, an orphaned child who grows up to make something of them self, blind people with seeing dogs, children with down syndrome and aspergers, the man on the news who lifts the car off the dying woman, and relief systems coming together for natural disasters. We even experience our own adversities everyday in smaller doses; the loss of family members, failing a class, losing a best friend, going through your first break-up, breaking an arm or a leg, getting laid off from your job, or even being the last one to get picked for baseball teams. Some may ask why these adversities are considered such a good thing? What good could root from suffering, or being miserable, or your whole world becoming seemingly impossible?…

Similarly, the adversity I have overcome has been vital in myself becoming the person I am today, and due to this I feel that I am more self-aware of myself, and others. In the case of myself, I am more aware of my thoughts, and I now tend to engage in positive self-talk to garner support and belief of myself that I realize that I crave for, which in turn, allows myself to not crave it from others, which has lead myself to become vulnerable in the past (Shebib, 2016, pg. 22). In addition, I still have work to do in completing my healing and growth, and one way I find that I can accomplish this is by attempting to find an individual that is willing to help me deal with my struggles, and to empower myself, whether it be from counselling or a personal…
