Overcoming Adversity In Mother To Son By Langston Hughes
"It's not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" (Rocky Balboa). In the quote from Ben Carson and the poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes, a universal theme is shown--life is not easy and no matter what. there will always be adversity or obstacles that need to be overcome. In order to be strong and tough, facing the problem is mandatory. To be successful, overcoming adversity is mandatory no matter how hard it gets. To begin, the poem, "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes, a mother is writing to her son about how life will get hard. She describes life as "no crystal air" which means it is not always easy.     The theme of, "Mother to Son," by Langston Hughes, is to keep moving on even when the worst of times is trying to hold you back.     In the poem Mother to Son, Hughes tells the tale of a mother speaking to her son about life and the hardships that one must face to make it in the world. Hughes uses extended metaphor to establish this view. In the second line he writes “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”, which initiates the metaphor. He then proceeds to describe the stair of her life. With the lines, “It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor…” he support the mothers claim that like has not been a crystal stair case by using the metaphor to make a direct comparison between imperfections in the staircase and the pitfalls in life. He continues on with the line “bare” symbolizing rock bottom, nothingness, the absence of value.     The poem written from a mothers perspective giving loving advice to her son about the challenges life will throw, yet the importance of never giving up, subverts the usual stereotype that African Americans live a bad life, abusing drugs and being criminals. The audience feels the warmth and care from her southern dialect, “Don’t you fall now – for I’se still goin’ honey, I’se still climbin’’ and “life for me aint been no crystal stair”. The informal language also portrays a truthful motherly figure.     When the mother is talking to her son she explains to him that life isn’t easy and that he should be prepared for the obstacles up ahead. For example, it is stated that the mother tells her son that, “Don’t you fall now-” “For I’se still goin’, honey” (17-18).
