In the poem, “Mother to Son” the speaker, is telling her son, how hard her live has been. The speaker compares her live to a staircase, in which has splinters, tacks and is even torn up, these represent the all the challenges in her life. “I’se been a-climbin’ on” represents even though her life has been filled with challenges she has persevered.
