Overcoming Obstacles
“Standing up for yourself can be tough, but earning people’s respect is worth the fight.” It is important to overcome obstacles because it builds confidence and mental strength. First of all, defeating obstacles helps you gain mental toughness and strength to handle life challenging battles. For example, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. faced many battles trying to obtain equal rights for African-Americans. During his journey he was beaten, spat on, and placed in jail several times. Secondly, overcoming obstacles helps your confidence. In the “Borders” passage, a “Blackfoot Indian” woman lived in Canada, but refused to consider herself a Canadian citizen. She wanted to be acknowledged as a “Blackfoot Indian Citizen”. One day she wanted to visit her daughter Laetitia in Salt Lake City in America, but refused to declare citizenship to Canada to cross the border. She remained confident and proud of being a Blackfoot Indian. For instance, she was so proud when the Canadian border guard said, “You tell me, and I won’t put it down on the form. No will know but you and me.” She thanked the guard for her time, but still refused to claim national citizenship to Canada or America. Although Laetitia’s mom was eager to see her daughter in Salt Lake City, Utah, her pride would not allow her to claim another citizenship besides “Blackfoot”. Laetitia’s mom decided to be a risk taker and fight for justice. Unfortunately, because she would not claim citizenship to a country, she was turned away from the American and Canadian border.
