Overcoming Obstacles During My College Career
We all go through obstacles that can hinder us from succeeding in school, jobs, in everything that we aspire to be in life. When dealing with these obstacles you must keep a positive outlook on everything that you do. With a little bit of hard work and dedication you too can overcome any obstacle. I’ve faced many obstacles during my college career mostly was due to finances and also trying to cope with my parents getting a divorce. I started my college career at University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the Biology program back in 2012. During my time at UMES, I wasn’t as focus as I should’ve been. Overcoming Obstacles Makes Better Individuals “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome” (Booker T. Washington). Obstacles are a required part of life if you wish to grow and develop. If you do not face challenges, you will not become a strong person. Individuals pushing to achieve the goals we set and overcoming the roadblocks ahead of us are what make us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and in my own personal experience, people encounter obstacles, and eventually overcome them.…

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

In my life I have overcome obstacles and shown persistence as well. There was a time when my determination stuck out the most. It was the high school county cross country meet. As a freshman I ran junior varsity, and was excited to know I would be leading the race. Once the gun went off I was not surprised to see only the trail and the bike before me. The race was going well but in the second mile it took a turn for the worst. A coach from a rival team pointed me in the wrong direction, and I led the top runners with me. Once I realized what had happened and that I was no longer in first place, I felt defeated. Others around me collapsed and dropped out of the race. My persistence kept me going. Emotionally and physically drained from the extra mile, I finished in 50th place. But I did not give up and I made…

It is genuinely fascinating how prosperous individuals approach problems. Where others see impenetrable obstacles, they see problems to embrace and barriers to overcome. Their confidence in the face of hardship is steered by the ability to let go of the negative attitude that holds most individuals back. A research done by Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania shows that success in life is driven by one key element, whether you have the belief that your failures are produced by your personal deficits beyond your control or that they are mistakes you can fix with effort. Success is not the only thing determined by your way of thinking. Seligman has found much greater rates of depression in people who attribute their failures to personal deficits. Positive thinking individuals fare better because they treat failure as a learning experience. They also believe they can do great in the future. Retaining the success mindset is not simple. There are things that specifically shatter it. These problems drag people down because they appear to be obstacles that cannot be overcome. However, this is not so for the successful ones as these problems never hold them back;…
