The movie starts out with the happily married couple Doug and Robbie Smith, who have just retired and are about to begin their journey sailing the globe on their sailboat. Two weeks before the Smith’s are about to embark, a good friend and Judge asks them if they have room to take care of two teenage boys, since juvenile hall is full and he does not want to send them to the county jail. The Judge informs the couple it will only be for a few days, a week max. The boys help the Smith’s get their boat ready; however, one of the boys (Luke) does not want to buy into hard labor. One night everyone goes out to dinner, expect for Larry, as they are walking home from dinner they see fire trucks heading towards the marina. The boys start running towards the boats, and see it is the Smith’s sailboat on fire. Doug gives them directions to move the other boats away from the fire, as he hoses them down. The next day Doug and Robbie sit the boys down and ask them for the closes why were wearing, as the police suspected arson. The only boy who didn’t give up his clothes was Larry. When Doug goes to see where Larry is, he finds Larry hanging himself. We later discover Larry has a history of arson and started the fire because he didn’t want the Smith’s to leave on their trip. The concept of Safe Harbor Peer Review is sort of new to me and in this week’s readings I learned quite a bit. In California where I reside I haven’t really heard of the topic and it’s not part of our Nursing Practice Act but I’m not sure if the facility I work in has this process. However, this concept is important to report unsafe nursing practices. Also I learned that under this act in Texas it “protects the nurse from licensure action by the BON as well as from retaliatory action by the employer” (Texas Board of Nursing, 2013). This is great to know in regards to my nursing practice even though I do not live Texas, here in CA we have a similar protection under the whistleblower protection act. I have not encountered any situation in where…

Since his mother’s death, he wore a beautiful gold and emerald necklace she said grants good luck to the barer. Today, Rick works for a team of undiscovered immigrants who he meets once a week at a dock in Florida to go to an oil rig out on the Atlantic ocean to collect the oil and sail back to Florida to sell to anyone they trust enough to make a profit off of. One day though, he goes out on his weekly shift to go on his own to pump out the oil and he is never heard of again and has no known whereabouts. Mark and Amanda mourn him for several weeks, but he isn’t the only one Mark mourned. A few days later, an arson fire is started at Amanda’s house, the fire was put out, but neither her nor her body was ever found. Mark didn’t think of those actions as any coincidence, they were done on purpose and by the same people, but he has no…

Safe Haven Laws were created for parents of a baby they cannot care for. It allows parents to drop off their unwanted baby in a safe place, such as a hospital or fire station. The nurse in the emergency department in a hospital will take an extensive medical history of the parents, and then the nurse will refer the parents to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Services. The parents can also drop the baby off as anonymous at which in that case the DCF will put an ad in the newspaper in case the parents change their mind about the custody of the baby, but they must act quickly because there is a limited timeframe in which they could do so. If the parents’ names are known the DCF is required by law to contact the parents about terminating…

The faults of society seem to go hand-in-hand; pride and prejudice. With a young man’s life in the hands of a tough jury, one juror had the courage to ask, “What if…” (12 Angry Men). A question that seems so easy to ask in a person’s own life, but hardly ever asked about the lives around us. Such a simple question, but it carries such power. In the 1957 MGM film entitled 12 Angry Men, Mr. Davis relies primarily on his beliefs of patience, kindness, and the belief that every life has value to show the other jurors that not everything is black-and-white.…

The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) implemented Safe Harbor for nurses to have a formal procedure to object to an unsafe situation in the workplace. The nurse’s duty is always to the patient! The BON (2013) refers to the duty of a nurse “always advocate for patient safety, including any nursing action necessary to comply with the standards of nursing practice and to avoid engaging in unprofessional conduct. This includes administrative decisions directly affecting a nurse's ability to comply with that duty.” If a nurse is put in a position where they feel that safe harbor should be implemented the steps afforded to them must be followed explicitly. The BON offers an abbreviated version of the form for safe harbor that can be filled out quickly, but the comprehensive version of the safe harbor form must be filled out before the end of the work period. According the BON (2013) “a nurse invoking Safe Harbor may engage in the requested assignment or conduct while awaiting peer review determination unless the conduct or assignment is one that would constitute unprofessional or criminal conduct, or the nurse lacks the basic knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to competently perform the assignment.” Another step in the Safe Harbor process according to the BON (2013) “the supervisor should sign the form and the nurse’s copy and submit the form to the Peer Review Chairperson since a peer review meeting to review the request must be set within 14 days of the nurse invoking Safe Harbor.” Marshall and Zolierek (2012) state “the Texas Nurse Practice Act requires organizations that employ 10 or more nurses to establish a nursing peer review committee for the purpose of reviewing practice incidents that potentially meet conditions for reporting to the Board of Nursing and to review nurses' requests for “safe harbor” in situations where the nurse believes she/he was in a practice situation with potential risk for violating a duty to the patient” (p. 36). The Peer Review…

When the woman down by the swimming hole found the boys trespassing on Harvey’s property, more violence unfolded. When Jim arrived on the scene, he immediately raised his gun and shot Lester and Buck. I find it unbelievable that such racial violence was once tolerated. Although Big Boy and his friends were trespassing on Harvey’s property, it’s very disturbing that Jim’s first instinct was to shoot at the boys because they were black. I feel that Jim’s physical violence resulted from internal violence, like his hatred for blacks. Being raised in the South, at the time of racial intolerance, Jim treated racism as a normal occurrence. Jim’s wife did nothing to stop him from shooting, so I feel she was probably just as ignorant.…

Throughout the novel, the boys all lose their innocence in one way or another. In the earliest parts of the novel, the fire is innocently used a smoke signal for the boys rescue and return to society. However, the fire burns out when Jack and the other boys go on their first pig hunt. After the killing of the first pig, the boys come back and they talk about the details of the hunt. “‘I cut the pig’s throat,” said Jack, proudly, and yet twitched as he said it” (Golding 69). By Jack saying that he is proud of killing the pig, it proves that he is begining to lose his childhood innocence. After the talk about the killing is over, the boys cook the pig over the fire that is supposed to be used as a signal; however, they use it as a way to cook the meat from their kills. Using the fire for the boys hunting activities, leads to the loss of innocence and devastation of the…

Plot: The twelve-thirteen year-old boys Gordon Lachance, Vern Tessio, Chris Chambers and Teddy Duchamp decide to go and search for the body of a dead boy in the woods. It starts by Vern overhearing his older brother Billy talking about it with his friend Charlie Hogan. They tell their parents that they have gone camping and start their journey. On their way there, they are met with many different obstacles such as the dump (where they are not very great friends with the manager), crossing a bridge that is made for trains and nearly getting run over, a scary noise in the night, leeches and a powerful thunderstorm. When they finally reach the body, they are met with Ace Merrill and his gang (in which Billy and Charlie are members), who came with cars and with more people. They want to claim the body for themselves and take the credit. Being outnumbered and younger Gordon, Vern, Chris and Teddy still manage to scare them off with Chris’s father’s gun. Afterwards, realizing that it would be stupid to take the body with them, they left for home, where Ace Merrill and his gang eventually beat them up. Ace also anonymously phoned the police, telling them about the body.…

Ralph was persistent in keeping a fire going as a signal to get them saved. They started the first fire, which caught the island on fire. In chapter 2 they soon noticed that one of the little boys with a mulberry birthmark was missing. They believed he got too close to the fire when it got out of control and burned to death. None of the boys even knew his name, didn’t care enough and moved on like nothing happened. Piggy says to Jack “You got your small fire all right.'" (41) Referring to Jacks lack of thought before he started the fire, not thinking of the dangers that could have happened. Proving that they need to be more intelligent and make decisions carefully. The fire symbolizes the civilization within the boys on the island. When the fire was burning, all was well, but when it went out it was noticeable that the boys had lost their desire to be rescued from the island and accepted their new lives on the island. At the beginning of the novel in the second chapter, the fire caused death, but another moment in the novel where the symbol of fire was repeated was ironically at he end of the novel when the boys were saved. The fire caught the attention of a ship that rescued the boys from the island. This time, it wasn’t a signal fire lit with the intentions of a hopeful rescue, but with savage…

Blood is thicker than water. This statement is normally talked about in a positive connotation. It has a meaning behind it showing that family always sticks together, if not anybody most can always count on their family. When it comes to me and my immediate family, this is the way I would use this statement. But I have recently learned that this statement can be used negatively as well. Someone or something that you think you know so well can quickly become a façade or fantasy. Unfortunately, someone’s own blood, which is not the best thing for that person, changes someone you once thought you knew. A young girl who I know has a mother who has been adulterer for some time now. This is a woman who has had countless affairs, while also being married with three children. All the while this young girl and I were best friends, practically family, for almost nine years while all of these antics were occurring. My family, mother and father, grew tired of putting up with this double life that we all were now drowned into, guilty by association. My parents began to pull away from the situation, but the young girl and I remained good friends. Hard times take a toll on a person, and the young girl began to change due to her mother’s antics. I tried to help and endure as much as one person can. But when it started to affect the way she treated me, the one person who had not burned her, was when I began to pull away. Feeling as any normal person would when one person is not present any more, the young girl’s mother began to miss my mother and the confidant she was. As my mother naturally denied her requests of friendship, this angered the young girl’s mother. She could not comprehend what my mother thought was so immoral about her lifestyle. The young girl’s mother’s life was not the norm, but sought out to make it allude to that fact, in turn making up stories of my father to make him sound equivalent the amount of scum she was. I, at a loss for…
