Overdose: The Next Financial Crisis
In a documentary “Overdose: The next financial crisis” (2012), trend analyst G. Celente stated that the recession in 2007/2008 was far from being resolved, and created even more dangerous ‘economic bubbles’ that are estimated to ‘explode’ in late 2017 or early 2018 with more damage than ever before. The main reasons are low interest rates in UK reaching merely 0.25% by Taborda (2017), which leads to huge state spending, national debt and growing interest payments. The predictions of the next recession became even stronger after stock markets and consumers’ confidence fell incredibly low after the UK vote to leave the EU, according to the “Independent’s” Economics editor, Chu (2016).

In 2008, the economy took an unexpected turn that experts themselves was in disbelief when it happened. The U.S economy was headed in a recession. The first sign was when Bear Stearns put itself up for sale, one of the largest as well as the oldest investment company that survived the Great Depression, but when the mortgage crises started, Bear Stearns was having a hard time (Solomon, 2011). When this happened, experts knew this was a sign of trouble. A few months later, Lehman Brother that was established before the Civil War was leaving the market as well. With these types of companies leaving the market, this caused the government to bail out banks as well as big automakers. This also caused the Dow Jones Industrial average to drop below 10,000 for the first time in years and the Dow continued to drop in the year 2009 to 7,000. Due to all the changes, this also caused unemployment to reach an all record high of 8.5 percent.…

Leverage is borrowing money to amplify the outcome of a deal. The financial crisis includes sub-prime mortgages, collateralized debt obligations, frozen credit markets, and credit default swaps. The way that leverage works in a normal deal is that someone can buy merchandise for 20,000 and sell it to someone else for 11,000 and they gain 1,000 in profit. However, using leverage if the same person with 10,000 goes to borrow 990,000 it will give him 1,000,000. He will then go buy 100 boxes with his 1,000,000 and sell them to someone for 1,100,00, pays back the 990,000 and 10% interest. This will give them a profit of 90,000. Leverage makes every deal better.…

*The great second recession, and the aftermath of the events will never be ignored. The antecedent events of 2008 were highly questionable, as to why they transpired. As of present day, the United States is still amongst a financial slump. Again, the rippling effects in the recession of 2008 are still felt both near and far. We as American, never believed that such a financial atrocity would ever occur yet again after the financial issues that the United States observed in the 1930’s. The National Bureau of Economic Research indicated the the actual recession of 2008 took place in December of 2007 (Isidore, 2008). The York Times released a statement in September of 2010, “The…

Investors, economists and academics ignored the warning signs of the looming financial crisis during the boom phase, lulled into a false sense of confidence by the relative stability of previous decades. Known as the ‘Great Moderation’, the economic era in the decades leading up to the global financial crisis (1970-2008) left many economists and academics in state of disbelief regarding market volatility and informed incorrect perceptions of risk. The era’s nickname was coined by Federal Reserve Governor Ben Bernanke who, in 2004, claimed that the decline in macroeconomic volatility in recent economic history was attributable to structural changes. He credited improvements in the economy’s ability to absorb shocks to changes in economic institutions, technologies, business practices and other structural features. One author claims that between 2005 and 2007, a mere 12 economists and analysts predicted a recession to be likely (Bezemer 9). This delusion that economic volatility would continue to remain low was based on seemingly empirical evidence from this same period of economic history. This was a dangerously optimistic interpretation, and played a large role in the crisis by informing the severe underestimation of risk. Given the global and historical context, the 2007 financial crisis as a whole questioned the belief that the monetary policy was effective at maintaining…

In the beginning, the only event that popped into anyone’s mind when they heard the word recession was in the 1930’s. During the 1920’s a stock market crash occurred, however, many believe that the recession began way before leading up to the crash as a whole. This recession went on through the 1930’s, ending around 1939, depending on who you ask. It took a significant amount of time to recover, and while doing so, prepared for another recession in future if it happened. Over the years, the economy has good and bad days, however, the United States have become aware of the housing market, unemployment, and bad loans affecting the economy drastically during 2007-2009.…

A recession is caused by many different factors, not just one. It is the coming together of many different problems, all at one time. Some factors that contributed to this last Great Recession include consumer indebtedness, income inequality, lax regulations and the housing bubble. In this paper we will discuss how the Housing Bubble exacerbated and what is its link to the Great Recession. It is necessary to note that because the bursting continues and because lessons have not been learned from previous recessions, nor this one, the problem may remain for a while, fueling this recession further.…

The first thing that I want to discuss is drugs, around 38,000 people in just 2010 died of drug overdoses just in America. One very crazy thing is, in 2006 there was over 8,000 people died from cocaine in America. In 2011 over 17,000 people died of taking to many painkillers. In 2013 over 9,000 people died from heroin in just America, how crazy is it that so many people are dying from this stuff. Over 25,000 people in America died from the overdose of prescription drugs in just 2014! We need to fix this huge problem facing America. This is ruining the country! Some of the symptoms of being under drug overdose are, being very sleepy and getting confused over barely nothing. Another issue is possibly having very bad chest pain from the heart…

The Crisis of 2008 was the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, and because of that it has earned the name the Great Recession. It is important to know that the factors leading up to this recession started years in advance and it wasn’t until 2007 that the crisis officially started. Though there are many factors that led to the Great Recession, the factors lead to one major cause, which was the bursting of the housing bubble. The crisis not only impacted the United States, but also other countries. Overall, the crisis was an event that still impacts the economy today, but we are slowly recovering.…
