ENG 111
Caitlin Moran stated that “over eating is the addiction choice of carers, and that’s why its come to be regarded as the lowest ranking of all the addictions”. I feel what she means is overeating is the kind of choice of addiction, which allows a person to be able to function as a normal human being. Overeating is one who uses food and eating as a way to hide from or manage their emotions, to fill a void one feels inside, or to cope with daily stresses and problems in life. The difference of being a drug addict or an alcoholic and overeating is that when a person is on drugs or drunk they are unable to take responsibility for their own actions and cant control what they do or say. When overeaters eat their feelings they can still do their job, take care of their children and live normal lives they just become extremely overweight.
Caitlin Moran also states that overeating is considered the lowest ranking of addictions. In my opinion it is just as serious as other addictions. Overeating is just as dangerous and self-harming as other addictions; it causes health problems like high blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Those who are obese increase their risk of heart diseases, many types of cancer and gallbladder disease. Compulsive overeaters often have fatigue and nausea. A lot of people even die from overeating as they would from being addicted to drugs or from being an alcoholic. Approximately 250,000 people die from overeating, 435,000 die from smoking related causes, alcohol kills about 85,000, illegal drugs kill about 17,000 and prescription drugs kill about 32,000 each year in the USA.
An addiction is just as serious as any other addiction if it is self-harming. I feel, as addictions shouldn’t be ranked in which addiction is better then the other because every addiction is a disease and overeating is a slowly self-destructing disease versus drugs and alcohol, which shuts down the body much quicker. I believe
