P-Nitrophenol Synthesis Lab Report
In this experiment, the goal was to synthesize and purify nitrophenols. Phenol was nitrated with diluted acid nitric by using an electrophilic aromatic substitution. This chemical reaction was an SN2 type where the aromatic ring was being attacked by a nitronium ion. Diluted nitric acid method was used to react the phenol because it would result in greater yields wanted products p-nitrophenol and o-nitrophenol, and very low yields of 2,4,6- trinitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol. First, the product was reacted and isolated .Column chromatography was used to separate o- and p-nitrophenol.
